I don't see people making such a fuss everytime a police officer or other public servant dies; they did a helluva lot more for the public good than Steve Irwin ever did

But again,
for the family

He gave so much more than you're giving him credit for. He was a passionate environmentalist who dedicated his entire life to conservation and promoting environmentalism. He was an iconic figure.

You gotta admire him going out doing what he loved doing most... interfacing with wild animals. He wouldn't even have been mad at the stingray... it was only doing what stingrays do.

RIP Steve

They have a nice tribute on the Animal Planet website:

tatement from Billy Campbell, President, Discovery Networks, U.S. Discovery Communications, Inc.

Our entire company is deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. Steve was beloved by millions of fans and animal lovers around the world and was one of our planet's most passionate conservationists. He has graced our air since October 1996 and was essential in building Animal Planet into a global brand.

Steve was killed during a filming expedition on the Great Barrier Reef. While we are still collecting specific details, it was a rare accident in which Steve swam over a stingray and was stung by its barb in his chest. A doctor on board Croc One, Steve's research vessel, was unable to resuscitate Steve and by the time he was reached by the rescue helicopter he had passed away.

DCI Founder and Chairman, John Hendricks said, "Steve was a larger than life force. He brought joy and learning about the natural world to millions and millions of people across the globe. He was a true friend to all of us at Discovery Communications. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin as well as to the incredible staff and many friends Steve leaves behind."

DCI CEO and President, Judith McHale said, "I don't think we will ever get over the loss of Steve Irwin, a human being of enormous heart, irrepressible enthusiasm and dedication to everything he touched."

Steve's loss has been felt around the world, evident by the hundreds of heartfelt condolences that have already flooded into Steve's fan site on AnimalPlanet.com.

To honor Steve and the enormous contribution he made to the world and to our company, DCI will rename the garden space in front of Discovery's world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the "Steve Irwin Memorial Sensory Garden."

DCI is looking at the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which we'll affectionately call "The Crikey Fund" to honor Steve's passion and exuberance for conservation and the animal kingdom. This fund will allow people from across the globe to make contributions in Steve's honor to support wildlife protection, education and conservation. The fund in addition to contributions by DCI will also aid Steve's Australia Zoo in Breewah, Australia as well as educational support for Bindi and Bob Irwin.

Right now, our focus is on Terri and the children. We will keep you informed as plans unfold to pay tribute to our beloved Steve Irwin.

Yes, just went on Animal Planet's website and that piece really is touching and it makes you very emotional. Hard to control it sometimes. Wow, I cannot believe The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin is not with us.

Wherever you are Steve, hope you are enjoying it like you enjoyed before!

We will live on without Steve Irwin, but as a result of his unfortunate death, less animals will. They lost a true hero, friend, and defender.

And my heart goes out to his family.

We will try to give Mr Irwin a modicum of respect. If you can't oblige, you can take a week or more off.

Thank you. The guy was a great environmentalist and wildlife supporter. He perhaps did more to advance our knowledge of the various kinds of wildlife than any other person, and did it in a way that was fun to watch...

Anyone familiar with sting rays know they can turn on a dime. I've seen plenty of people staggering in agony along a beach after being stung in the foot. Lots of blood and pain. Just like being stabbed with a meat cooking fork, but also with poison. Usually not deadly but even a foot sting can cause one to go into shock.

Sure takes the fun out of strolling along the shore line of a beach. And they are so hard to see along the shore line, until you step on one and they sting back.

He did a lot to help and save animals. There's not nearly enough of good people like that left.

I grew up catching turtles, snakes, and every other crawlie I could find. I always felt I could have been his understudy.

Bye Steve, we'll miss you!

I suppose God needed a trusty caretaker of his heavenly animals. As much as he will be missed here on earth, I beleive he has gone on to a higher calling.

But the impression I got was that he was a showboat who enjoyed the spotlight, with his stupid antics and annoying personality. I won't miss him, bu I'm not saying he was a bad person.

And you're right Eli, public servants choose their job. They choose to serve the public in a way that is direly needed, for no recognition, and no pay. Steve Irwin chose to "give" for his own stardom, IMO. He showed off playing chicken with deadly animals and it finally caught up with him.

Once again, I feel for his family. But he knew his risks and got what was coming.

I guess you didn't watch his show. He was doing what he did way before television. He wasn't doing it for the fame (although his failed movie Collision course doesn't help here) he was so enthusiatic because he loved animals and wanted to teach others this enjoyment of nature. He risked his life just to save them from fishermans nets, or other failing Zoos.

I would agree, he knew the risks but faced them anyway.

It's deeper than that.

He gave, a lot. While public servants give, it is their job to give. They chose that profession.

He gave because that's who he was.

great person, you are totally right. People need to realize the entertainment and knowledge he gave people of wildlife.

I grew up watching the croc hunter steve irwin and he was my childhood hero. He still is. It just tears me up inside to think that a man like him, somebody who genuinely cared about animals to the point that he would consider a bird's life to be more important then his, would pass away many years too young.
He was truly and man among mice and one of the lights in this world of shady people. I remember during one documentary there was a brush fire and he'd jump in before the flames reached certain areas and he'd rescue geckos and mice and all other small kinds of animals and bring them to a place where the fire had already passed. And then he would go throughout the places where the fire had passed and rescue animals that could have a chance of living. He picked up a gecko had true emotionally driven tears running down his face and said, "This lil ah heck just isn't going to make it but the least we can do is be there during its last moments."
If this isn't true emotion, true heart and feeling and love and compassion then I don't know what is. I'm willing to bet all the riches in the world that Steve Irwin wishes and wished the best for the StingRay that had pierced his heart. The StingRay did more then Pierce Steve's heart but he pierced the heart of millions and millions of people including myself whom had literally grown up as a child admiring him and his every movement and tear jerking, awe inspiring love.

Steve Irwin is for this generation what Marlin Perkins (Wild Kingdom) was for me as a kid. It was Perkins' knowledge, curiosity, love, and compassion for animals that I saw every week that helped shape my love and compassion for animals today, and Steve Irwin made just as strong an impact on people's love and interest in animals. His death is a tragic loss for the animal kingdom.
