Everyone keeps talking about his "vision" and how much of a "visionary" he was. I think this really undersells just how great of a salesman he was and tarnishes his reputation as such. The guy didn't have a vision, he sold you one. As spidey put it, he took the technology out of technology. Not because he made it easier to use, but because he sold us on it. He sold us on the fact that this was the future. How often did Apple release the best product they could possibly offer? Almost never, they could have always of thrown in more processing power, battery juice, storage capacity, etc, they didn't have to though because Steve could sell a blind man a Rembrandt. Because of his great salesmanship he pushed us in a good direction.
this is all you've ever got. It might be true if the legions of current Apple customers all watched his keynotes, which is far from the truth.

What Apple understands very well is user experience and industrial design. Your oversimplification of his role at Apple tarnishes his reputation more than anybody short-selling his salesmanship.

Wreckem stated it better than I have.

He knew the end was near when he handed the power over to the current CEO.

He was a true pioneer. RIP.

Without Wozniak, we wouldn't have the true beginnings of Apple and the microcomputer revolution. Without Jobs, Apple probably wouldn't be here, much less in the same form as today. Anyway, RIP. Much respect for a dream fully realized.

He might not be a technological visionary, but he had final say on Apple products and who knows what wasn't released. He's had a very high success rate of product launches. He is at the very least a visionary businessman and one of the top businessmen to have lived. Taking a company on the brink of bankruptcy to being the worlds most valuable company is no small task and he by and large is responsible for that. He's not just a salesman. He is a business icon. Love him or hate him.

Definitely. I completely agree with that, although I disagree with you on splitting the terms businessman and salesman. They're the same fucking thing, you just call yourself a businessman to make yourself look more important.

After seeing that picture of him so skinny in that black dress not long ago, I think everyone could tell this wasn't far away. Yet I'm sort of shocked, too. I've never owned an Apple product, yet I know that someone who influenced my everyday just passed. RIP man, cancer sucks.

It's amazing just how many news outlets had media ready to roll on his death. CNN is playing theirs now.

You're kidding right? Of course not everyone had to watch his speeches. Not everyone listened to Christ either, he still influenced others through others. Steve was able to sell things, sell them better than anyone. He could convince people to follow his "vision" so ferociously that they've been on crusades since the late 90s trying to convert people. What the fuck do you think all those I'm a Mac and I'm a PC commercials were all about? Please...

I'm truly sad about this. He still had more to achieve. Yet instead he will miss out the future and the golden years of his life.

Not to derail the thread, but just a FYI:
All media outlets have obituaries ready to go for all aging celebs or anybody not doing well. They were ready years ago when he was first diagnosed. All they have to do is post it.

Despite me ripping Apple and their clientele, I am extremely saddened by this news. We lost an amazing visionary. He was among the very few in the world that made various devices relevant, and something every consumer would really want.

It always seemed like Apple made "good-ideas" spectacularly better. Even though his products were not the first of their kind, (tablets, smartphones, mouse, GUI, animated movies, etc etc etc..) he produced/marketed them very well, and forced everyone to revise their products to desperately compete.

America is/was a world leader in technology and design; in LARGE LARGE part because of Jobs.

Rest in Peace. Thank you for not leaving American tech industry in the dust to play catchup with the world, and for changing computing for the better forever.

Yes I'm the ignorant one, yet you're thanking Steve Jobs for bringing you the PC? You do realize there were personal computers out before the Apple I right? yeah.. I'm sure you don't.
