*wrong. Android phones are the Leading Candidate to exterminate the PC in homes. (not in the workplace).

Why? Care to speculate? This one is pretty easy.

*by wrong, I don't mean to be harsh, I mean I disagree.

i dont see steve jobs doing anything that could exterminate the pc. you can conveniently do some things on an iphone/ipad but they certainly could never replace your pc

This is hard to ask but what is the latest hardware that is Mac compatible as in Hackintosh, cause sooo many people are building them. I don't know whether to turn back the calander to the Gigabyte UD3R & P P45 boards and 775 socket or eat the apple pie on the other fork.

EDIT: O look, i said apple and didn't even know it

how could it be apple.

everything apple does some other company be it google or microsoft does in a more open and accessible way.

if you want a PC OS , or home media thing, or tablet you can get a android or windoes one, or windows 7 / linux on the desktop.

i dont see anything that makes apple special . they if anything make a high barrier to entry to their products so they could never eliminate the traditional pc on cost alone. i'd say the thing that will eventaully kill the pc, is linux in all its forms (be it meego, android, ubuntu, what have you)

Linux based systems are PCs, so I don't get how linux could kill the PC.

I agree, linux is the way forward, But.. There' is one thing that "makes apple special" which is that they are one of the few companies that both develop the hardware and the software for their products, which obviously makes for less inter compatibility issues, and in some cases a more stable environment. Where as Microsoft, or a linux Kernal must run on EVERYTHING, Mac OS X only needs to run on Macs.

Apples are also PCs. They just have a shitty OS.

Agreed they are Personal Computers, buuut a Shitty OS?! Compared to Windows?! I beg to differ. For my OS X (as it is based on BSD) is just the nicest, most end user-friendly distribution of linux, when you look at it like that, it makes sense.

I've spent the last month or so back in the world of Windows, and to do the most basic things I've been banging my head against my desk.

Edit: On a side note, what is this doing in CPU's and Overclocking?

How can Steve Jobs exterminate the PC when Mac's ARE PC's?

Idiot looking for attention who wrote this article. People still need to do work, and don't want to do everything with their tablets and phones sitting on a couch.

Agreed, I've got an iPad, and an iPhone, I won't be giving up my laptop anytime soon though.

imo 99% of the world should be on iPads. Let us nerds geek out on real computers, and give app-driven devices to the rest of the world to use as tools, instead of toys to tinker with. Life would be so much easier that way.

I think iPads are something special, but they are nowhere near ready to replace laptops.

they dont develop their hardware anymore, they use intel cpus and have moved away from the hardware aspect.

None the less they do write the software specifically for given hardware combinations, i.e. Macs rather than building software to run on anything, even when they were on PowerPC they were just buying CPU's and popping them in, it's not like they've gone from building processors to using intels.

iPads are not even meant to replace computers... yet. They probably will eventually, but I don't think they're even close to being there yet. Too many limitations.

Basically, Apple created a whole new market. And no, the previous tablet market doesn't count.

Plus, it's amusing to note that they were near-obsolete the day they were released. Even my iPhone 4 has more memory than an iPad, and that 256 MB RAM amount in the iPad does put significant limitations on app developers and on Apple in terms of multitasking, etc.

I agree, but it does (in my opinion) compete with the netbook market, If your looking for a portable, cheap device that you can carry about and access the internet on then for me the iPad is almost without parallel. But youre right they did create a new market. iPads don't compete with day to day computers but for me, my set up has changed from "Desktop+Laptop+Netbook" to "Desktop+Laptop+iPad"

First, your title: "Steve Jobs - Leading Candidate to Exterminate the PC" is grossly off the mark... so is the first line "Most feared man for Pc"

The article is discussing a book about personal freedoms and specifies that apple is one of the worst offenders in the world when it comes to DRM and the suppression of personal freedoms.

Never does it mention it being a threat to the PC market (despite their fruitiness, macs ARE Personal Computers... And FYI, windows =! PC... I am sick and tired of people saying "linux, PC, and mac"... its "linux, windows, and macOS" and all three are operating systems for PCs.. and not the ONLY operating systems, you also have solaris and freeBSD and more.

Anyways, there is never an assertion that apple products will somehow overtake windows products, but that apple is the most harmful to consumers at the moment. Which is true, apple has worse "business practices" then MS did in their darkest.

Dr. Wu said:
When asked which companies did he fear the most, the author of the book said that Apple is the firm that poses the highest danger to the freedom of the Internet.
