Isn't that like half of the Apple praise in here though? Taking previous ideas, polishing it and turning it into a hot ticket? One of the famous Jobs quotes is something to the extent that Apple is both shameless about, and great at, stealing ideas.

If he likes the Sansa, great. iPod's have some good features but they are far, far from flawless.

Oh no, im not saying the iPod is the end all be all for MP3 players. It is far from it. But to call the best selling MP3 player OF ALL TIME garbage is a little extreme, wouldn't you say?

I'd call some of the best selling albums or highest grossing movies of all time garbage lol. Not all big hits are bad, far from it, but I don't think they're exclusively good either.

Further you can make a copy of something that's garbage and make it 'good', I mean that's essentially what the iPad in particular has done.

a) Didn't know Apple had free apps for navigation, so thank you for that.
b) Mapquest's app for Android is absolute sht compared to Google Navigation. Very sorry that you are stuck using Mapquest. America Online is awesome!
c) Android has surpassed iOS and every 1 in 2 phones in the world uses Android at 52%. 31.7% for Apple. How is that for "surpassing"?

?????

When I used Google for navigation I used Google Maps and it gives me only one suggested route, unless I want to avoid highways, tolls, etc.

MapQuest online provided me with multiple route suggestions, the option of fastest/shortest route and most important the ability to alternate my route by dragging the route line.

Google Maps - http://maps.google.com/maps?q=newpo...ent=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl

MapQuest - http://mapq.st/nnr949

Let me know which one is more like American Online. The fact you didn't even know about Mapquest on the iPhone shows your ignorance.

I don't believe I've spent a nickle on any of the products he's credited with developing, etc. However, I read most of (will finish reading) the article in today's paper (Oakland Tribune) about him, the kind of article one associates with an obituary, not simply the retiring of a person from their occupation. Very amazing person, obviously, and the article absolutely begs the question, is it not true that a single person can have an immense positive influence and contribution in this the most modern era, i.e. today's world. Do not underestimate the importance of leadership. He was the consummate technical corporate executive.

a) Google Maps can also drag the route and update on the fly - where do you think Mapquest got that idea from? Your Google link didn't ask for directions so of course it's not going to tell you route time. Learn to internet before posting.
b) Google Maps is the reason that Mapquest got pwnt. It even says it on their wiki:
MapQuest is an American free online web mapping service owned by AOL. It has been on the decline ever since the introduction of Google Maps.
c) Have fun using an inferior product, I'm not judging you if that's all that's available on the iPhone. America Online and iPhone, the perfect match (both cater to non-technical people and make/made their money doing it).

????? Who wrote the Wiki? Mapquest people? No.

And yes, you can drag with Google, my bad. But only one suggest route?

You obviously didn't look at the links. Directions? Of course, I'm asking for directions but you're blind if you think Google is better than MapQuest on what I just linked.

or you could buy navigon, which is a full fledge navigation app, which is better than both of the products you are talking about.

but it does seem like most people with android are extremely against actually paying for apps, so that may not be a good route for most of them.

Navigon? Sorry to hear you're using that POS. Sounds like you got ripped off, especially if you're using Android.

Seems like Co-Pilot is the way to go and for $5 I may try it out for areas without a cell signal. If I'm spending $50 (like Navigon) it's going to a Garmin with free lifetime map updates. All in all Google Navigator is king b/c it's free and you don't have to worry about updates.

Edit: Not to derail the thread but Steve Jobs is smart guy who made lots of money for Apple. /lovefest

navigon is far from a POS, it is basically a garmin on my phone. i actually like it better than the nuvi that i was using before.

1 anecdotal review and wow it's a piece of shit. you must think everything is a piece of shit based on how you make decisions.

and it's too late to derail this thread, the fanboy wars derailed it way back.

The kicker for me would have been:
<<<3. No way to increase the level of detail on a map (ie add street names). >>>

No way in hell I'd pay $50 for an app that can't get scale dependent rendering correct. But as long as you like it, it's all that matters right? Have fun.

I trialed all of the major GPS apps for iphone, and Navigon was the best. Worth the money to me because the cheap ones lacked things I enjoyed in Navigon. Not sure if it's worse on Android but if they're the same I can't believe you know what you're talking about... or we look for very different things in a premium GPS app.

Where's the option to select the fastest or shortest route?

The suggested routes already show the fastest and shortest. Why would you need an option for that when it's already in front of your face? If you're talking about tolls and highway only, hit the options button.

Also, where is the Streetview pics equivalent in Mapquest? Google Nav will pull up a picture of the house on the street when I arrive. Much more convenient than trying to strain your eyes looking for a house number.

Click the link and read the droidforums to see if you are having the same problems. It's not rocket science. Droid users hate Navigon, maybe iOS doesn't have the same issues.

Well it's a positive thing to base it on as the iphone GPS works a lot better than the Atrix I'm using now. I actually think it's broken given that I got it used and it can't lock on at all.

Seems like all the asshats bitching about Steve obviously didn't get the pleasure to experience one of if not the coolest times in the history of personal computing, the Apple II era.

Edit: There is no comparison to current tech abilities in this post, this post is talking about the massive change in technology where computers were mostly only available to corporations and Apple helped usher in the era where it was possible for people to have them in their homes. This should be noted in Steve's legacy (see agreement with the quoted post from Ns1) and not just the last 5 years of his career.
