The other reason I'm bothering to engage in conversations over this stupid ass joke is because people don't know the difference between generalizing a group of people and making fun of a select few in a community that do things like this.

I'm tired of having to combat douchebags that want to lump blacks into one big category.

So educate us, if you would be so kind. What are the "subgroups" that we should be using?

It isn't that we are sensitive so much as it is some people will jump at every opportunity to aggrandize themselves by jumping on anything perceived as politically incorrect.

Blacks in the US in general are too sensitive though, they have quite a few people telling them that they are victims, and as such they look for such victimization everywhere.

By and large I would disagree that the blacks are the ones being too sensitive. The issues do relate to race, but I think the majority of the "outrage" is a bunch of well to do white people with way too much time on their hands getting their panties in a bunch any chance they get. Any time something like this pops up the blacks (NAACP and the like excluded from this, mind you) seem to either have not seen it or not cared.

There are no "subgroups" which is my fucking point. You people pretend 1 black person represents the collective but you do not hold non-blacks to the same standard.

People from other race groups get judged as individuals, we get judged as "The community".

I am an individual first, black second. My thoughts, my behaviors, and my morals are a reflection of me as a person, not a reflection of my race.

But, it seems like many of you don't understand that on this forum. When someone brings this sort of thing up, they are told that they are "up in arms", they "dont get the joke", they're playing the victim card.

Google it, I will not participate in your race baiting.

I'm wanting to know the the location of a place you mentioned. Sounds like you got caught in your own bullshit and are dodging the question. Typical of your type.

That's not true. There are many words for groups like "hipsters", "rednecks", etc., which are words that refer to cultures instead of races.

How can we (meaning everyone) refer to distinct cultures within the so-called "black community"?

I get the joke. I just said that it wasn't funny.

Why does shit have to be such a big deal when someone doesn't approve of stupid shit like this. All of a sudden, I "don't get it", I'm "up in arms" about it.

The other reason I'm bothering to engage in conversations over this stupid ass joke is because people don't know the difference between generalizing a group of people and making fun of a select few in a community that do things like this.

Initially you didn't get the joke- you though that he was saying that black Americans cannot spell.

Also, I assume most people are responding to the OP and the article, not you. You not getting the joke made for a fun aside, though.

You can't be serious. Did you not see the question that was asked of him before he made the joke? "Is this how you spell Lasonia?"

Don't try to polish a turd.

I GOT the joke, it wasn't funny. Even if I didn't "get it", it is still not funny. It's very insulting. I know thats hard for you people to concede.

You don't know this. This is a baseless assumption. Any white person I know that has racist leanings tends to generalize about white people in trailer parks and Hispanics (well, to them Hispanics are all Mexicans ).

Also, any white person I know with racist leanings also makes the annoying distinction about black people who are "articulate"... so they do make distinctions apparently, they just sound ignorant making the distinctions. However, I think it is pretty apparent that in America the black person, especially the black man, has to fight a bit harder to "pull away from the pack" in the eyes of whites which is obviously unfair. Of course, all the TV, movie, and music stereotypes don't help the case for blacks in this country. People are pretty foolish b/c alot of times they think that what is presented to them in the entertainment world represents a complete reality.

This is getting P&N-ish. My apologies.

I don't know if you get it yet, do you refute your erroneous slander in which you stated that Steve Martin was saying African-American's can't spell?

Because he wasn't. The only way you could think that is if you did not get the joke.

As for making fun of La***** names, I'm certain I have seen it in movies, where African-American actors make fun in the same way. IIRC it was a African-American woman introducing all of her children and they all had absurd La**** names. . . Forget the title of the movie.

You STILL don't get the joke. Now that is pretty funny.

"You people"? Whatever do you mean by that?

Is just proof that there are people out there who generalize us in this way.

I don't think people would be so quick to generalize African Americans if a large, noisy majority of them weren't doing their best to perpetuate and live up to the stereotypes. I've met quite a few educated well-spoken black people, but most of the rest I see around talk, walk and act like jailhouse thugs.

In fact, it seems that even geniune African blacks seem to go far out of their way to distance themselves from the members of their race that were born here! Every African immigrant I've met here (and there are dozens; they all seem to work ad furniture stores, oddly enough) do their best to speak correctly (to the best of their accents), act polite and dress nice.

The same can be said for my race too, Mexicans. The vast majority just act so damn... MEXICAN that it's frustrating.

Also, for the record, across the span of 31 years, 5 states and a dozen jobs, I've met exactly ONE white person with a "La*" name. I've met so many blacks with "La*" names, I've forgotten pretty much all of them.

On Friday, Martin engaged in a back and forth with one of his over 4.5 million followers when one asked him "Is this how you spell lasonia?"

The actor replied with a racially charged joke one Twitter user captured in a screenshot: "It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant?"

So the joke is that in some communities you might find someone named LaSonia?

Not real funny, but what is offensive about it?

Its like this for every person part of every group and they're judged in the same stupid way its not unique :/

IE Jews are rich and stingy jokes.
