STFU responses should be stopped

Some forum members don't agree with others (what's new...to be expected).

What is NOT to be expected are multiple responses endorsed with STFU. I don't know if it's a case of emotional unstability, simple ignorance, or the lack of even a rudimentary communication skillset. It really doesn't matter WHY it occurs.

It is not only not a nice way to behave, it is extremely offensive. This should not be tolerated, and should be addressed.

I made one simple post and fortunately I wasn't flamed (not that it would matter), however others were treated with gross disrespect.

The whole issue is one reason why I usually just read the posts and generally use the forums in order to glean insightful information.

The forums and associated threads should offer the ability for announcements, questions, discussion, and yes, even arguing. It's implicit that the members should at least be civil to each other regardless of whether or not they agree or disagree with each other.

But, hey, I know...@#it happens!

EDIT:spelling fix

Unfortunately, too much of the membership, is too immature for the reasonable common courtesy you are asking for.

Agreed, also some folks could use a little thicker skin. I have noticed the mods have been doing alot of babysitting lately. Props to the mods.

You need to learn not to always take people seriously, or at least not take their comments to heart. Ignore them and you'll feel better.

STFU! :|

I KNEW someone was gonna post it...

OP: Your nick implies you are just getting old and cranky. Take some Geritol and lighten up. The whippersnappers these days aren't like the kids when you were growing up...

(Overall, though, I agree with you for the most part. There are a LOT of people that are downright rude and contribute nothing to the forum)

This is what I meant when I posted this in another thread:

I find that a highly ignorant response. Yes, thicker skin is needed here, but we could all use an attitude check on here and stop being negative. I try to be helpful and cheery in most of my posts hoping it will spread, unfortunately there are way too many pissy posts on here that n00bs see and then copy. And, responses like this get us no where. Hell I tried to discuss a video that I made last night, maybe get some tips or ideas, but I just got flamed (expcet for one helpful members) that it was a horrible video (when I admitted it was).

To the OP, just ignore them if you find their comments stupid or mean (not saying anyone is, just if the OP feels so), and if you feel the need to respond to their comments then do so in a respectful matter, you will find they will respond with a different demeanor, and things get cleared up. Don't sweat jerks, it's the internet.

Have a good day everyone.

Unfortunately as compuwiz said, the immaturity level here is too low for that.

Head over to Video . . . CPU and O/Cing is [very] tame by comparison . . .
[even with conroe kicking AMD's best]

. . . or even P&N
:Q

there you can grow thicker skin . . . or perhaps you can find a geriatric HW forum when politeness and form [still] "rule" . . .
[send me a link if you find a good one]

or perhaps you can IGNORE these immature people and their rude replies.

tek-tips.com is an active forum where politeness and professionalism are the norm and immaturity results in no one responding to any of those posts. That whole site is done with self-moderation, where any user can "red flag" a post, and they do get removed by an admin rather quickly. But hardly any problems arise ever because the atmosphere of respect has been established and is enforced. You'd also be amazed how well they avoid fanboy posts. I've seen numerous times some new person there try to start for example the classic intel vs. AMD flame war, and that person is immediately ignored by all and the "flame war" never continues beyond that initial post.

Sorry - outside of OT & P&N, the point of those forums are to ask questions, read responses, offer advice, and take people seriously to increase your knowledge of hardware / software / other tech issues. And even in OT or P&N, you can have a healthy forum without the STFUs or even the misspelled fvcks or sh!ts, of which I have no idea why these are allowed.

I'd think if there were some hard definate rules, like (1) any post containing STFU, fvck, sh!t, or any other "misspelling" will be deleted, (2) any post in the tech forums that's purpose is to insult, or in no way contribute to the topic's discussion, will be deleted. And any user can call a mod's attention to the specific post for deletion - I think we would have a quick turnaround to a much more respectful atmosphere for everyone. And this would also reduce the mods workload in the future. Might be worth the couple months of tough love.

But as it stands now, the rules are, if someone is rude and insulting, "you need to grow thicker skin." Which is probably the worst solution out there.

If that's all the user is posting, then there's nothing to be learned from the post, and it can be ignored along with the rest of the trolling posts. Moderating is hard work, and they can't babysitt everyone all the time, and it would cause even more complaints.

I'm just thinking realistically.

it's not that hard. ban them. 1 week for every stfu post. problem solved. the rest will work itself out eventually, either people will be gone or they'll learn to post something a bit more worthwhile. same should go for avoiding the swear filter by using alternate letters, which i was pretty sure was against forum rules.

Unfortunately, some STFUs are definitely deserved (as a response to an ignorant, utterly moronic, or just plain troll post). Unfortunately, the hard is determining whether "STFU-sayer" really meant it, or was just being a jerk.

first of all . . . thank-you for the link . . . . i bookmarked it and will investigate it further . . . from a quick look it seems much smaller than ATF.

secondly, if someone is rude and insulting . . . . the BEST thing to do is IGNORE them . . . that's what 'grow a thicker skin' means.
[and 'rude and insulting' can describe several behaviors and varying 'degrees']

on THESE forums there is a LOT of 'freedom' . . . it is looser and more lax than some and generally it runs [really] pretty well . .. with the biggest complaints centering around Video and P&N - which are respective "dumping grounds" for GH and OT.

i do see other forums have a quick way to "report" offenders . . . ATF just has a more cumbersome method of PMming or e-mailing [overworked] Mods . . . or posting in FI . . . as usual it is up to the Administrator what 'tools' they implement.

However, MOST people making these complaints are pretty "thin skinned"

-my opinion

I don't necessarily agree with "stfu" as a rule to invoke a vacation, but there are a few members who apparently need to be taught some lessons in civility. However, I've received such a comment from someone recently, and rather than get defensive, I explained my position. He apologized rapidly for taking out his frustration on me. I actually think more of that person as a result. But, again, a few lessons in civility need to be tossed out here and there.

actually no, if you can't post anything other than "stfu" you should get a blanket ban. there is no reason to post that, period. if someone is trolling let the mods deal with it, a simple PM can usually help clear that up. one of the reasons this place has slid downhill is that everyone seems to think they are responsible for taking care of "trolls" or whatever else. posting "stfu" in response to someone doesn't do anything but start/continue flame wars. imho the same thing should go for people who post nothing but the roll or confused emoticon, but what do i know.

one of the problems with moderation is that you have to decide what intent was blah blah blah. if you have nothing better to do than type in STFU and hit the reply button you obviously have nothing to contribute to the forums. a few people get banned, the rest will fall in line. if not, they get the boot. seems to be a pretty easy fix for what amounts to cleaning up worthless posting.
