Stick with what I have, or do some "future proofing"?

Hey everyone!

I haven't been on the forums in quite sometime, so forgive me for not being up to date on this stuff.

Let's get down to the meat and potatoes of why I made this thread. Tax time is here, yay! I am wondering if I should use a good portion of that money to upgrade a few "older" parts in my rig, or just stick with what I have and put my money to use elsewhere.

My system specs are as follows:

CPU - I5-2500k with a mild turbo-boost to 4.2
Mobo - Asrock z68 Extreme 7 Gen 3
RAM - 16gb G.Skill DDR3
Vid card - eVGA GTX 980Ti Classy
Storage - 1x. Samsung Evo 850 1TB (current os/games)
1x. Crucial M4-128
2x. WD Black 1TB
PSU - Corsair TX 850
Case - Corsair 850D (this thing is a beast)
Monitor - Currently I am using my t.v for my monitor due to some space constraints. The t.v is the LG 55LB6300 55" 1080p connected to my rig via HDMI. My actual gaming monitor is the Asus VG278H monitor.

Seeing my setup, do any of you see some weakspots? Should I stick with everything I have? I strictly game. I don't do any type of editing or anything like that. I am wondering if the new z170/270 boards will be a big jump for me (with the new technology on them, e.g NVMe and the sorts)


I appreciate all the feedback I can get. I'm really stuck on the fence with this, and I don't want to throw down 600-700 to get a minuscule amount of gain. Thanks a lot in advance!

Depends on what you are playing, and if you have found it wanting. Looking at your build, unless you are playing a very recent release, what you have should be adequate...

I wouldn't upgrade especially since you're on 1080p but only you know if you feel restricted with the games you play.

Dropping that kind of money for technological differences you don't really need and have no impact on normal gaming is not useful.

Also next month there might be a big change coming on the CPU market (not just a new generation coming out which is meaningless these days but rather AMD potentially coming back) so I don't think it's the right moment since it's not like you really need a CPU upgrade.

Looks fine to me, you can't really future proof that I imagine.

Newer than what my main rig is at any rate.

Save your cash would be my advice

Wait for zen to launch at the least and see how intel CPU prices shake down after, then decide. I think CPU's are going to be cheaper in a month or two if the rumors of AMD undercutting intel by alot are true.

Thanks so much for all the input guys! Looks like I'll be holding off on upgrading until a major increase presents itself. Perhaps I'll just splurge on a few games and a new headset (don't like my A40s). I appreciate it!

Looks to me like you future-proofed when you bought a 2500k and a 980Ti.
