Scenario:
Roomie #1 and roomie #2 met in college and have been roommates in Maryland for 4 or 5 years. As far as I know, they've never had any major problems.
#1's father falls ill with cancer around Xmas 2008, and #1 goes to Florida to be with family. #1's mother also falls ill. #1 is then laid off in mid-January. Obviously, a shitty hand has been dealt. #1 eventually decides to stay in FL to be with her family and looks for jobs in the MD area while down in FL. #1 is still in FL and has not yet found a job in the MD area.
#2 has an issue with living alone, and has been doing so for the past 4 months.
#1 pays rent and her share of utilities until recently. Now #1 doesn't want to pay for any of the cable or internet. I can understand this, but it does put an added burden on #2. #1 eventually asks #2 to find someone to sublet her portion of the lease. #2 does not want to live with someone she doesn't know and doesn't want to bring a friend in, only to have the friend kicked out when #1 eventually wants to come home.
Now #1 and #2 are in a huge back and forth fight over what's fair and if #1 should end her lease so that #2 can find someone to live with her.
What the hell is fair in this situation? Is there a way to resolve this without a broken friendship? To be honest, one of them is my girlfriend and I'm friends with the other, so I'd rather not see them fight.
