For everyone asking how much thermal grease to apply to their CPU's, Arctic Silver's website has the PERFECT picture of what a perfect application of thermal grease should look like.

Yeah, but I'm always afraid to and spread it around anyway.

Anyone have bad results from that? I do it by the as3 directions, figure a "blob" won't cover every part of the die.

And this is why they tell you to do that if you're using Ceramique.

Our testing has shown that this method minimizes the possibility of air
bubbles and voids in the thermal interface between the heat spreader and
the heatsink. Since the vast majority of the heat from the core travels directly
through the heat spreader, it is more important to have a good interface
directly above the actual CPU core than it is to have the heat spreader
covered with compound from corner to corner.

i put a blob of AS3, spread it around with the nozzle a bit and then take a plastic card (Credit card, id card) and run it across the die leaving a very thin layer yet sufficient.

WTF...he used the whole tube?!

I had a guy do that with his 2100+, he came to me and asked why his temps were so high...I looked at it and he running at 65C Idle...haha...he eventually fried his processor because he got some AS3 into the pin holes of the socket...it was funny.

That's for AS2/3. No way you can do that with AS5 which is much tackier and thicker, thus harder to evenly spread out.

Yea AS/5 is much thicker. I wonder how many people actually spread out the thermal grease so it looks like the one on the AS site. I mean they make it all nice but when i do it, its all crappy but still my cpu is cool....39-42C. Though it use to be 37-39C. I dont know why it got hotter. There isnt really any dust inside my comp or anything. Maybe someone can help?

I'm surprised that the machine even booted up like that! :Q

I actually did spread out a thin layer of compound on the CPU die when I used Arctic Silver II, but I now use the "blob" method with Ceramique. On my Athlon CPUs, the entire CPU die ends up covered when I put a thin "line" of compound on the die like this.

Just follow some of these examples...there's 3 or 4 pages worth....not really recommended for dial-up, btw.

Wow, some people are incredible....I mean, they're smart enough to have a job that'll let them pay for some of this stuff, you'd think they'd be smart enough to get directions and follow them...

AS5 or ceramique???
I just ran out of my good ol' toob of AS2 and have a mobile barton on the way. Does it even matter which one? I'm thinkin' no, but as always I just go with the prevailing wind, rather than think for myself.

thanks
