i saw this whole set @ a circuit city, but i couldn't turn it on at that time. it will take up a decent amount of your living room space. it's wood, has a massed produced look to it, speaker cones look flimsy and cheap, the whole thing is made in china, and i think the receiver is made in maylasia, all for around 500and change, cannot remember.

does it really sound good?

my friend told me to get a yamaha 5540 instead and pair it up with some JBL 135s.

my honest opinion on this setup. it sounds really nice. i had a much larger and more powerfull setup before...this sound more crisp and clear. However i have to admit my other system is much louder but u gotta figure my other setup has a 8 inch powered sub and the fronts have 10" woofer plus mids...and tweets.

I like this setup better cuzz it save a ton of living room space. and loud is not my main objective anymore......btw these are loud enough to make neighbors complain. i wouldprobably prefer a louder subwoofer.

overall i am beyond happy with this setup

I have to agree here.....I've been poking around Home Theater setups for months (I take forever to buy big ticket items ), and the Yamaha 5540 has the best setup, best sound, best overall. I conferred with a friend who is a "Home Theater Architect", and he said the Yamaha was an excellent reciever (just skip their speakers).

I d'no...I'm an Onkyo fan, but the thread in that other forum has me a bit shook up....Onyo's big name, and for them to ignore a major issue like this is rather childish, if not unsettling.

xclan, this onkyo system saved you space? it's not a trendy mini speaker system... i guess your previous set was bigger than this set?

that is a positive if you feel things sound more crisp and clear, the satelite cones really look futile, at least when i saw them yesterday. i do not care for loudness right now. is the sub tight with its bass then? my worry is that is is muddled, a big box spitting out muddy low tones.

lol...I know what you mean and that's only from my Z-560's...last year my neighbors kept bitching at me about the subwoofer so I always had to turn the knob all the way down... =(
Towards the end of the year when I thought almost everybody had moved out I decided to demonstrate the "full volume" setting to my friends...hehehe...
Of course it turned out there was still someone around...who yelled VERY loudly at me...hmm

they initially ignored it but now i have owned up and fixing the problem..if you read the thread carefully it appears to a batch of receivers that had the issue...some bought and had no problem

If you're looking for the best mid-priced surround receiver around, get the Onkyo TX-SR600. It's a much better receiver than the Onkyo TX-SR500 that is included in the HTS650 bundle...It's available for around $320 at ShopOnkyo (refurbished). Yes, that's about the same price as the receiver + speakers in the HTS650 bundle, but you get what you pay for.

Of course, if price is your utmost criterion, then go for the HTS650.

(See my post in the hot deals section for more about the TX-SR600, if interested).

so u think out of the s650 package it is the receiver that more readily needs to be addressed, not the speakers.

It was an IC chipset that was defective in a specific run of the reciever that caused the LFE problem, nothing to do with the speakers.

actually my question is irrespective of the receiver ever having the defect. i know it was the receiver that had some issue with lfe.

so it has individual inputs for each speaker right ? (to be use with a PC/multimedia/gaming setup)

cuz i just got the logitech 680's for 280, and while it is a nice system for the money, they have no midrange whatsoever.

Earlier i said i would prefer louder....

well i changed my mind i had my laptop hooked up to this setup.....
it was loud. I havent tweaked the sound setting much.....
the bass is loud.
I played
"Going back to cali" from ll cool j
"funky expedition" from concious daughters
"one" from metallica

and a bunch of other stuff.... I am very impressed that 350$ can get me DTS and this sound setup....still havent tried surround...waiting on a progressive scan DVD player.

as for the speakers......

they do not look like the highest quality...they look like basic surround setup....but they sound very very nice. I am thinkin of sellin my rear surrounds and going with smaller or more flush mountable speakers. these rear surrounds are prolly too big for my likings.

I am very glad i bought these. Best 350$ i have spent in months.

I got my order in on Monday and have been messing around with it since. I got a refurb unit, but so far it appears rock solid. I watched Gladiator with DTS, and it sounded awesome. I tried Subwoofer mode 3 (I think this is the LFE setting that a lot of people were having problems with), and it was great. Definitely a lot of bass coming through this bad boy. I really don't know much about surround systems, but I really have to say this was a great deal for under $350. Seeing how I had a 5 year old Aiwa mini-system before (which I paid $250 back in the day), I feel this is an absolute luxury.

I just bought a gorgeous 600W Panasonic 5 speaker with sub and reciever system from the New FRY's that just opened in Dallas for only $230. I love it....but is there any trick to making sure the unit doesn't overheat in the entertainment center cabinet? I think if I have my DVD player and Receiver on at the same time I could fry some eggs... someone help!!!

Thanks,

Peace out

Just placed order, 319 shipped.
Dunno how ppl justify paying all that money for klipsh pro medias when u can get in on htib like these. I got a buddy of mine a kenwood package a while back and he loves em.

Needed new console/pc speakers and hope these work out. Onkyo makes great stuff, imho, have a integra 8.2 in my main setup.

I've had this system since December and purchased it from CC for $439 (coupon).

Overall, I am very pleased with the performance and sound from these speakers. Last I checked, I didn't buy speakers to look nice. I bought them to sound nice and these do the trick. They are larger than some of the component systems that you can buy out there (like the Sony's, Panasonic, JVC's, Kenwood that are advertised for 200-300) and the receiver has plenty of jacks (optical, digital coax, s-video) for all your component needs (I have digital cable, dvd, vcr hooked up, soon to be computer).

I sat around for weeks looking for decently priced systems and I must say, this is definitely a bang for you buck system. Where you'll probably pay more than some of the other "lower priced" systems, it has some great sound quality as some of the better Bose and Polk Audio speakers system.

I highly recommend this unit for anyone who has a few extra bucks to spend.
