Just an update. We signed the contract for the 4th month yesterday. The woman there said that 2 or 3 people with these long term rentals had had the airbags replaced in the last week or so. Maybe it actually is coming soon. If we keep it all month they will have spent around $5500 just on us.
For the record, the Outlander , although lacking some of the bells and whistles the Lincoln has, has performed well. We drove it to TN and it handled the mountains there with no problems (I can't say the same for the Jeep Grand Cherokee our daughter rented). Gas mileage has been about 30 mpg on average and it is comfortable for long trips.
As an aside - sometimes hanging on to outdated tech (we call it "hanging on to" while our son prefers "hoarding" ) can come in handy. This car has no cd player and we had books on cd to listen to for the trip. We dug out our old Sony personal cd player, car power cord, and a thingy (that's the technical name) that broadcasts the cd player sound over the car radio. Okay so it's an FM transmitter. That worked excellently. Also found our 2007 Garmin GPS
https://imgur.com/cW28Z4z . Yup. It worked fine for what we needed (we don't have unlimited data on the phones and were afraid that using GPS on them would be too much.)
