Since they charge $20 more for a single stick over in the servers than two of the same total capacity, I'm guessing the latter. With only two DDR slots on the board two 128's seem less than ideal.

Don't like the sounds of the rebate, but gambling for $100 using a $36 stick as the bet, well... I mean if you go for the memory you're getting $36 worth of product at most (as of Crucial's prices today) and if you want to go beyond 256 you're stuck trading/selling one of the sticks. Stupid decisions always get in the way.

If anyone still have a coupon code... Planning to buy this tomorrow morning. Email enabled in profile if anyone feels like Santa

$150 for 512 isn't too far off crucial pricing, though

I'm happy w/ the 400 Mhz bus... I'm happy with the whole system!! Picked one up a few weeks ago... went for the rebate. Upgraded to the low end GForce 4.... upped to 40 gig HD. Added 256 of my own $40 Compusa PNY memory. Added my $80 Compusa Turtle Beach soundcard / free speaker set... ripped my 40x liteon and 2x Pioneer DVD writer from my other system... now have a sweet little (inexpensive) rig!

That's $150 on top of the 128MB, so it's $150 for 384MB in effect.

I disagree.

To get 512 from crucial as a single chip it costs you $140.39. As two 256's the total is 134.98. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing if you go to 512 through Dell you'll be getting two 256's.

Dell's price for 512 is then $150 (for the upgrade from 128) + 36 (the value of the 128 by Crucial's pricing you give back when buying the 512) for a grand total of $183 for the same product you can get from Crucial for $134.98. You could use other vendor's pricing for the equation, I just like to use Crucial as they're an accepted standard in memory.

The part people most easily overlook is the opportunity cost to buy the upgrade, that is, losing the initial 128. As you're not getting 512 in addition to the 128 included in the original price you must include the value of the hardware you're losing as well as the upgrade price itself.

A $50 differential for the same amount of ram in the end is quite a difference. Also if it's two chips as I expect you've just complicated further ram upgrades. If you're looking for a larger amount of ram the better buy is to get the 4500 with the base 128, pay $140 to Crucial and end up with 640 meg of ram for $10 less than it would have cost to get 512 meg through Dell.

Dell now sucks big time.

I am still waiting for my May $100 rebate. I have a certified return receipt for the original mailing which the fulfillment company says they did not receive.

So 3 weeks ago I faxed in all the paperwork.

They can't find that fax.

So I faxed it in again to a supervisor and they can't find that.

So, YMMV on the rebate.

No more Dells for me. After buying almost 15 systems from them over the last 8 years, they can kiss my butt in the middle of Central Park if they think they will get another penny from me.

It's complaint time to the FTC. Maybe Michael Dell will be one of the next CEO's they nail for cooking the books. He's sure cooking the rebate books.

I received my $300 dollar check from my laptop. It only took about a month from the time I sent it in.

I am having problems getting to 539 before taxes. They may have changed the site or I am doing something wrong when I click thru. I tried to call it in and they said they would take my order if I have proof of this config. Could someone post there order number or follow the steps outlined to see if I am doing something wrong. Thanks to All. My nephew needs a new pc for school. Thanks

and then i'd have the hassle of
1) doing something with 1 128 meg stick of ddr (~$25 on ebay but then theres that hassle)
2) rebates
3) ordering from a bunch of different companies
4) working out when my sister will get the $100 back (shes a pain to deal with)

and since
1) its not my money and this thing is still a kick arse rig under budget
2) if i rarely ever go above 256 i doubt my sister will ever need more than 512

its worth it ($35 to keep it upgradable beyond 512) to do the simpler thing.

EDIT: from what i know about reading dell's order breakdowns its 1 512.
