Still looking for any solutions on SB Live conflict with MSI Pro2-A

I attempted to install it again last night.

Same errors.

In device manager;
PCI Input Device shows the yellow "?"
Creative Multimedia Interface, same thing

I have tried to load/reload drivers, and it keeps telling me that it can't find them on either the SB driver CD or the MSI VIA drivers CD, or on Win98 cd.

Also, after loading SB drivers, and Windows boots, I get an error message on a bar titled "HQ Audio Task Bar" saying it can't find DevCon32.dll file.

If I try to open any of the SB applications, it says that initialization failed. No sound.

I have disable onboard Legacy and all the stuff below it that pertains to the sound card, i.e. gameport. I also disabled onchip sound in the advanced chipset section of the BIOS.

I have changed PCI locations and don't see any conflicts with IRQ, but maybe I am missing something there.

System:

MSI Pro2-A
Duron 800 w/Taisol HSF
256 mb PC133
Voodoo5
Generic 10/100 NIC (disabled and removed during the attempts with the SB)
Win98

I would try reseating all cards except your video card, and sound card, and go from there. Make sure that your onboard sound card is disabled. Take care.

Hmmm...I don't know how much I can help but here are my thoughts...

1st make sure that the PCI slot closest to the AGP port is empty. Second, remove anything and everything Creative driver related off the HD. Remove the SB card. Reboot and make sure the system comes up fine and there are no OS related errors about the SC or drivers. If there are, you have to fix those before you go any further.

Then shut down and re-install the card. Boot the PC and let Windows do it's thing with the drivers. Do not load the Creative drivers until after Windows finds it and gets its own drivers loaded from the OS CD. Reboot again to make sure you're ok. After that you should be able to load the Creative drivers.

Another thought is to check theIRQ being assigned to the card. See if you have anything else with the same IRQ. If you do, try to remove that device then reboot with the SB installed and see if it will re-assign both IRQ's properly.

I have done all of that, Zeppy.

When Windows tries to load the drivers, though, it says it can't find them.
I try having it search through the SB Live cd, MSI VIA cd, and Win98 cd, to no avail.

I would receommend getting the newest driver pack for Creative, using those, AFTER removing all prior references, AND installing the latest 4-in-1 VIA Patch set.

ah heck me. Can't find the drivers huh. Got me stumped. I agree with supersix. Follow his reccomendations and see what happens.

This is a silly statement, but are you sure the driver path is correct when trying to load from the OS CD? Not to be insulting or anything. Just the only thing I can think of. Sorry I couldn't help more.

First off, the sound card drivers aren't located on the motherboard CD-ROM. A "Sound Blaster Live!" CD should have been included with the sound card. Secondly, the VIA 4-in-1 drivers won't effect audio. They are mainly for video, hard drive, USB and power management. Third, don't bother with the drivers from the CD-ROM, use these instead:

Once you've downloaded the drivers onto your hard drive, proceed with the following:

1. Go into the Device Manager; click and remove everything associated with the Sound Blaster Live. If the computer asks to reboot, select "No"!
2. While in the device manager, also remove the network card and modem. If the computer asks to reboot, select "No"!
3. Exit from the device manager and shut down the computer.
4. Open the case on you system and remove the network card and the modem.
5. While the case is open, plug the sound card into PCI slot 2 on the motherboard (2 away from the AGP slot).
6. With the sound card in PCI slot 2, boot up the system and let Windows redetect the sound card.
7. Once you're in Windows, double click on the file you've downloaded; The drivers will automatically install and reboot your computer.

If the sound card doesn't work properly at this point, there's either something wrong with the sound card or something's conflicting in your Windows system/registry.

Once the sound card is working properly, shut down the computer and add the next device (i.e. network or modem). Boot into Windows and install the drivers for it. If the newly added device effects the sound card, shut down the system and move it to another PCI slot on the motherboard. Do this untill and the devices are working properly in the system.

If you still can't get it to work, I'd have some additional questions to ask about your system.

1. Was Windows 98 originally installed while on another Motherboard? If so, You'll likely need a clean install to get it working properly with your new motherboard.
2. What type of power supply are you using (i.e. 250W)?
3. Is there another system you can try the sound card in?
4. Does your computer have any free IRQ's? (if you don't know what IRQ's are, you probably shouldn't be installing hardware in you system).

yes, I have formatted, and loaded fresh each attempt(I think 3 times)

2. What type of power supply are you using (i.e. 250W)?
I just installed an Enermax351 in my Enlight 7237

3. Is there another system you can try the sound card in?
yes, and I'll give it a shot tonight. Asus P5A, AMD400

4. Does your computer have any free IRQ's? (if you don't know what IRQ's are, you probably shouldn't be installing hardware in you system).
I have limited knowledge of IRQs, but I have reassigned them before in other systems when adding hardware. I'm not at my PC right now, but I believe 7 and 9 are available. I went into the BIOS last night during an attempt, and diasbled the Auto assignment, and tried to assign it manually in device manager, but the devices reported that it wouldnt let me change them. In the boot up, it listed the multimedia device at 5 when it was placed in PCI slot 2, and I saw no others listed with that IRQ.

I'll try what you listed over the weekend and report back.

SirFshAlot if all else fails you might want to try the VIA VT82C686A(yes I know your board has 686b southbridge, but it might be worth a shot) audio driver, 68MU111C.EXE, it's about halfway down the page. LOL hope the link works this time.

Do Clean Install...
I had a problem with installing new MB a few weeks back...
Windows refused to install any drivers for sound card..
Restored a image of the HD and drives installed first time ...

Yikes. I wouldn't try DX8 yet if I were you. Some folks reporting big problems with it and you can't uninstall without (ANOTHER) reformat. DX7 is fine. This definately isn't your problem.

Have you been installing the DOS drivers when you install Creative drivers? They are installed by default and you have to uncheck them to avoid installing them. Talk about causing IRQ conflicts and crashes!!

I had to reload Windows six or seven times before realizing they were the problem. Went to Add/Remove software, removed all Creative drivers, unchecked "Load DOS Drivers" and reloaded drivers from CD. No problems whatsoever since. Those DOS drivers are Bad Mojo.

BTW, Device manager: yellow question mark simply means windows has detected the device but has not completely identified it (because it doesn't have the drivers) and has not loaded drivers. This is no big deal. Just download Creative's latest drivers and install them.

Again, BE SURE to UNCHECK DOS DRIVERS! I had IRQ conflicst out the wazoo with those stupid things and they crashed my system literally beyond recovery several times! GOOD LUCK!

Did you install the pci to host controllers from the disk and the others?If you did then try this .....remove the sound and modem from the Dev Mgr ,shut down and take the sound and modem cards out,reboot and see if you still have the ? in the Dev mgr.If so it is a conflict other than those cards,An"other device" driver is missing.Find out what it is naturally,if possible.Shutdown reinstall the cards ,reset the CMOS jumper(just in case),reinstall drivers.Disable SB 16 emulation in Dev Mgr.
