Waiting to jump to Opt 185 from my 4000+ I got for $79 from newegg a while ago.

That 4800+ was tempting though.

I am running 2.4@2.83 (283x10)

Since this is the best my Socket 939 mobo could ever have I think this might be a pretty attractive option for a good price...

Yeah I got my 4800 today and just got done installing it. As you can see- it's working!

WOAH! When I posted less than 5 hours ago not only was the 4800+ not in stock at the egg... it wasn't even listed on their site as an item they carry. This is what I get for waiting 5 hours -- $20 less and a better experience purchasing from Newegg! w00t!
Thanks for the heads-up Johnnie, I wouldn't have checked Newegg again before purchasing.

Eps.

Edit: maybe it was listed at Newegg after all and I just didn't see it because it was at the end of the list marked as out of stock.

Just made the purchase from Newegg... at the time of my last post they had 46 available... by the time I made the purchase a few minutes ago they were down to 30 available. Good thing I saw this tonight as they might have been OOS by tomorrow morning.

Holy hey. Newegg hasn't had a 4800 in stock for ages. (You can see that the last review is from January.) I hope they have a whole bunch of them and that they do one of those e-mail newsletter discounts.

they were down to 26 available during the early morning hours... and now they are OOS. Man I am glad that I saw that deal--it only lasted about 12 hours!

Thats funny Old Hippie. At about 5pm EST it was $115.99. Guess they can just keep creeping the price up as long as there is demand.

Really? It wasn't meant to be. The price at 5:52 EST and 8:11Pm EST was, and is, 119.99. I even cleared my cookies.

I need your help in getting one of these. Which one would you buy, and why?

1. $119 for the 4800+ OEM (newegg)
2. $99 + shipping for the 4400+ (TD)
3. $119 for Opteron 170 from zzf
4. $63.50 for the 4200+ (newegg)

I am concerned by the heat output. Opteron 170 supposedly gets hot when OCed; 4800+ doesn't OC as much as Opteron, but is cooler, and is OEM; 4400+ not sure much about it but it is cheaper with full retail warranty (TD charges shipping, but you get the copper pipe cooler and only 200mhz slower than the 4800+; and 4200+ is nice, but only 512k per core L2 cache. I want 1M per core. Not sure if it will truly be faster, but I feel it is better?! Help!!! I want to buy one of these soon, before they run out. Can someone give me a real life answer? Please, no C2D talk. Thank you.

I am hoping so because I have the same heatsink. I am guessing it will because the retail HSF is smaller than the XP-90.

Mine shows up tomorrow.

Does anyone know if I will have to reinstall XP to get both cores running?

@freshspace

After comparing some benchmarks, I felt that the 4200+ X2 was the best value for my needs. The 4800+ X2 just wasn't fast enough IMO to justify spending the difference in price. If I was needing an upgrade for a gaming machine, then I might have given the 4800+ a more serious look. My 4200+ X2 is going in a HTPC. $63.50 shipped was just too good to pass up.

Nope, it should run right outta the box. I swapped my 3500 for an X2-4800 and it's been running just fine for 1 1/2 yrs. Depending upon your OS, board's features, and games you play, you may have to apply some "fixes".
