That comment is far from ridiculous. There are many things about FF7 that were a step back from FF6. The use of Materia in my opinion was a step back from the previous system, and the combat options were scaled back. Plus much of the plot made little sense, even for a FF game (which always have some wacky logic). I far prefered the more open FF6 to the game that FF7 turned out to be. While it was fun, I found it disappointing and unfortunately the creators continued to expand on the disappointing parts rather than the parts I enjoyed in the subsequent game releases.

Like I said, its perfectly valid if you enjoyed previous FF games more than FF7, but the comment in question is absolutely ridiculous. The implication that the only people who prefer FF7 over previous games in the series are people who never got to play them or have some kind of stupid anime fanboy crush on Sephiroth is asinine.

I think the materia system was one of the best things that ever happened to the FF series and I've always been disappointed that they never brought it back, because it could have been even better with more thought and development put in to it. That said, the previous games had great combat systems too. But theres a lot more to love about FF7 than 'Sephiroths flowing silver hurr' and there are tons of people I know who played and thought FF7 was the pinnacle of the series when it came out, people who grew up on SNES and NES and other earlier gen systems.

I have never met anyone who liked FF8, but I know that I enjoyed FF9 quite a bit. So I woukd suggest that one if you get one of those games.

I just saw that PS store has 5-9 on sale for under $5 each. They have 4 too, but for some reason it's like $20. I was thinking about picking up one or two.

So 9 is a must play? What about 4-6? And 8 isn't worth it?

To be honest I do not get all the love for 7. It was a great game no doubt, but I think 6(3 in NA) is by far the best FF of the series. If you have not played FF6 then you really should. It really is that great.

This.

FF6 is one of my fav games ever.

I was always 2>7>3>9 then the rest.

I liked 3--I liked it a lot, but if you ask me, Final Fantasy games need more story-forced structure. It was cool to be able to pick and choose who you wanted, when you wanted, but it was more of a hindrance for me.

I thought the greatest thing about it was the diversity of game mechanics (player types) and extras.

2 and 7 had the best stories of the bunch, with a significant amount of OMFG moments. FF3 had not one OMFG moment. and yes--I played all these games new. I was an FF homer from when FF1 was new. :\

A local store has (or had, at least) a copy of 8 and 9. I thought about picking them up but my PS3 is really hit or miss on PS1 games, so I passed.

I really enjoyed 7 and 10.

8 is the worst one ever. ever.

9 is pretty damn good, though. It feels much more like an SNES FF game than and of the PS1 versions. Totally worth it, IMO.

Hell, I still have all of the PS1 originals. My SNES and NES cartridges went bye-bye a long time ago....

lol, I just remembered. When "trading in" my SNES and games to get my PS1, the crooks at 'ol Buy Rite (I knew they were horrible), offered me $10 credit for the SNES and, I think, $8 credit for FF2.

:hmm: I was like: "wtf is that about?" they said something about it being rare and popular bla blah just take your damn PS1!

Yes--I traded it in only because FF7 was released the following week and I needed a PS1, lol.

the only problem with FF7 was that the Materia system locked all of your characters into God Mode very late in the game--and very late. You still had to grind your ass off to do it (and in even more "balanced" contemporary games, god mode is far easier to achieve--Skyrim--).

But I can't imagine why someone would think that FF7 is "closed" compared to how "open" FF3 is?

Yes--I use the US numbers. Deal with it. :awe:

I only played FF1. I never recall FF2 or onward ever being released? I'm guessing these were obscure releases back in my day, that the younger hardcore FF7+ guys went back and played after the fact.
For me it seems there is a gap between FF1 and FF7, and while I at least recall FF games after 7- they were never really noteworthy in my mind (I didn't play them but weren't the splash 7 was in its day).

Final Fantasy 2 and 3 were Japan only. FF4 was rebranded as FF2 and they also made some minor changes (reduced the amount of cool items, especially use-in-battle stuff like spider webs and hourglasses, changed a few graphics & names).
FF6 was rebranded FF3 and had almost no changes to the actual game.
When FF7 came along they decided to stop lying about what was what. In fact the American version had two kick ass monsters to offer an extra challenge, which the Japanese version did not.

EDIT:
The reason I like playing this on Windows is you can find mods to increase resolution and get higher quality models for the heroes.

A remake would be pretty sweet, and I think 7 would benefit from it the most considering how bad the graphics are for it. It's not my favorite FF game but it was a lot of fun. Also I'd like to see the remakes for the earlier FF's come to a console (same with the dragon quest remakes). The remake of FF1 on iOS looks pretty sweet but I would much rather play it on my TV than on my phone. Same with the remakes they did for the DS, I don't like it when they remake a previous console game on a mobile system it feels like a downgraded experience to me.

You're still waiting on that remake because there never was going to be a remake period; it was a pretty obvious attempt at making sure the Playstation faithful stayed that way and didn't migrate over to the 360 which was a much stronger competitor to the PS3 than the original Xbox could have ever hoped to be to the PS2. Trot out the fan fav, redo it in "PS3" graphics, and voila, 360 what? lol

It was the first jrpg I ever played and I did enjoy it quite a bit although to be honest it's had it's time in the sun, let something else shine. In fact I wouldn't be too disappointed if the whole series took a rest to be honest. I'm about FF played out. Just my opinion of course.

edit Actually this whole remake thing irks me to begin with. It's like taking a film like Star Wars and redoing the SFX to update them for the current genera.....oh wait, bad example. Nevermind. FF7 remakes for everyone!
