That comment is far from ridiculous. There are many things about FF7 that were a step back from FF6. The use of Materia in my opinion was a step back from the previous system, and the combat options were scaled back. Plus much of the plot made little sense, even for a FF game (which always have some wacky logic). I far prefered the more open FF6 to the game that FF7 turned out to be. While it was fun, I found it disappointing and unfortunately the creators continued to expand on the disappointing parts rather than the parts I enjoyed in the subsequent game releases.
Like I said, its perfectly valid if you enjoyed previous FF games more than FF7, but the comment in question is absolutely ridiculous. The implication that the only people who prefer FF7 over previous games in the series are people who never got to play them or have some kind of stupid anime fanboy crush on Sephiroth is asinine.
I think the materia system was one of the best things that ever happened to the FF series and I've always been disappointed that they never brought it back, because it could have been even better with more thought and development put in to it. That said, the previous games had great combat systems too. But theres a lot more to love about FF7 than 'Sephiroths flowing silver hurr' and there are tons of people I know who played and thought FF7 was the pinnacle of the series when it came out, people who grew up on SNES and NES and other earlier gen systems.
