Billy Mays type of death or a heart condition I wonder. ....I've been in some rough turbulence before and I can understand how even without crushing your melon while unbelted, the sudden losses in altitude can knock out someone with a heart condition. Or various other conditions one might have going into a flight.

I have no real desire to fly any time, regardless of the article. That's more to do with the hassle of it all, than fear of being damaged. I'd be perfectly fine with trains to cross land, and sailboats to cross the ocean. Sailboats are objectively more dangerous, but they're objectively cooler.

Really freaked me out the first time I felt bad turbulence on a flight when we were out over the middle of the Pacific and the plane was just shaking and rattling, losing altitude fast, going left hard, then hard right, up, then back down, and the sound of everything rattling was the worst part. Kept quiet like everyone else on the flight but definitely white knuckled the armrest for that 15-20 minutes not knowing that was something relatively normal.

Turbulence? I have flawn in typhoons...and being on a tiny fishing boat in typhoon. Puked my guts out because of the heaving and the fish smell.

I don't really want to, but I also don't want to spend 25 hours in travel time when I could spend 2 hours instead. I do actually enjoy the feeling of take-off and landing though.

I've only flown a few times, but I don't really tend to be that scared of stuff like that and even found the turbulence events kind of fun. I figure if it's my time, it's my time, it's a better death than some horrible disease like lyme or something slowly eating away at you. If I'm going to go, make it quick.

Yikes I bet some folks pooped themselves. I always stay buckled in, but it is what it is. I fly often because driving to Europe or South America takes too long.

I was on one particularly bad vomit comet airplane adventure (severe thunderstorms). I had to block my ears so I didn't hear the puking sounds of the other passengers or I would have followed suit. Everything that was loose in the plane was bouncing between being stuck to the ceiling or stuck to the floor. Thankfully, everyone listened to the pilot and put their seatbelts on.

That would make me extra-glad for my noise cancelling headphones. I'd have to choose the music carefully though, is that more suited to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", or maybe go for sardonic and opt for the Goo Goo Dolls "Long Way Down"?

/not me googling "best music to die in a plane crash to"

Gimme that Blue Oyster Cult if I'm going down.

worked offshore between Darwin and Timor leste. flew from the rig once on the heilo in the first bands of a typhoon, was stuck in Dili for 3 days because the commercial flight to Darwin canceled for weather. it was rough to say the least. also flew into the Simpson desert in the outback. very hot air comes up off the desert and your lift is greatly effected as you hit the thermals. Its hard to imagine someone dying without some kind of condition. of course, we have done a lot of training and are in a different state of mind when using the air for work.

last flight i was on was Frankfurt to Denver. a number of people chucked and it was pretty damn smooth. people need to relax. also, Lufthansa has good snacks.

The airports and associated lines (mainly security) are my biggest reluctances to flying. I have, however, passed up three flights/vacations so far since the start of the pandemic. I didn't care to be in a flying tube with recycled air and every other passenger coughing and sneezing, etc. It's even worse now, since the masking is no longer required. I would bet that less than 5% of airline passengers are still masking on a plane.

I've flown at least a dozen times across the US and never had any scary turbulence moments.

I actually enjoy travelling by train assuming no time crunch, but it's even more expensive than flying (I can't do the coach seats on a train, it has to be a private room).

I've taken the train to get to the GTA before and it is a nice ride. It's longer than driving or flying but not too expensive, and it saves the hassle of having to drive or park in the GTA. Just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride and view.

If had rich asshole money I’d buy a private rail car, have it renovated to my spec, and spend months a year just rolling around the US hitched to the back of Amtrak trains.

That's an interesting idea, except our trains move slow, and you'd spend an awful lot of time rolling through boring ass states quite slowly relatively speaking. Unless you took lots of trains just in the west and on the east coast, while keeping the midwest travel to a minimum

That sounds like a problem that rich asshole money can solve.

Well presumably would not be in a hurry to get to any particular destination. When going transcon I'd want to go through Chicago rather than the Deep South so midwest travel kind of unavoidable.

As for the car I think I'd pick up a stainless steel Budd observation car and get the interior redone in streamline moderne. A lot of cars are done in old timey fashion which isn't appealing to me.

There's always something to look at. Anyone that can't find something interesting out the window lacks imagination.

Excellent point.

I'm pretty sure the absolute last thing I lack is imagination.

If I win the lottery can you help plan some of my spending?
