Get one from BestBuy online which is selling the laptop for $799. You can get a $100 mfr rebate from Toshiba. Is there any one knowing any coupon from best buy?

After reading a few reviews it seems the major drawbacks for this laptop are no integrated NIC (not an issue if you're using WiFi) and sh!tty battery.

<< Does this laptop come with any oem OS and other software? >>

XP Home

Along with the following:

Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, McAfee Active Shield, AOL, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Toshiba Custom Utilities, Satellite Series Online Documentation, VirtualTech

The first thing I'll be doing with mine is replacing the garbage laden XP Home installation with a nice, clean XP Pro install. Then I'll double the RAM, add a wireless NIC, & I'll have a cheap wireless internet machine for my bedroom.

I don't think the XP install is full of "garbage." Most of this so called garbage is just some extra icons on the desktop. The programs or files attached to the icons are small, and if you don't like something, just uninstall it. What you get with this laptop are three disks for putting XP back on the computer. These are a drag, in that you will completely wipe the drive when you reinstall this way.

This is my first notebook computer and so far I really like it. Gamers should be aware that this display is pretty much a 1024 display. It will do 800 X 600 and 640 X 480 games, but it suffers a little in quality. For Internet, video editing, word processing, etc, this screen is perfectly fine. If you hook up an external monitor, your gaming results might be better. For $700 what can you expect. This $700 computer is much more valuable to me, than a $400 Geforce card. It is lots of computer for this price. Most families would be better off buying two of these computers instead of one $1500 notebook.

I got some PNY 256MB sodimm for $72 AR at Circuit City and it worked perfect. If you are ever going to do video editing, or you want to hook up a fast external Firewire drive, I highly recommend the IBM Firewire card that Computer Geeks is selling for $26. This card worked perfect with my Canon ZR20 and external Firewire/USB drive case that I got at Computer Geeks. With Media Studio Pro installed on my notebook, and a 60GB 7,200 rpm drive installed the Firewire case, you could literally edit a movie comparable to the "9-11" documentary that was on TV last Sunday. You can literally have a whole video studio right in your backpack. I am not kidding about this. For someone like me, who has edited movies for ten years, this is incredible.

Just came back from BB didn't see this laptop at their store. Then I went to CC (Circuit City) which had this laptop on display and turned on. It felt reasonably fast with it's 1.06GHz Celeron and 256MB RAM. Had a touch pad, no eraser head (like IBM ThinkPad), floppy on the right side, build quality was decent for a sub-$700 laptop.

This would be perfectly suited for WiFi as a nice machine to lug around the house but I wouldn't buy this if you need true portability only because of it's lackluster NiMB batteries.

Viper GTS - Here's a WiFi access card worth looking into.

This deal was so tempting, I had to jump on it. I just got back from Best Buy, but they don't even carry this model in the store. So don't even bother going there in hopes of scouting it out. The salesman didn't know anything about it either. For some reason, I had to pay sales tax on the computer, which didn't make any sense. The total came out to be around 875 for me. 8 dollars to ship, 66 dollars tax. Does anybody know why I have to pay sales tax for an item that's being shipped and ordered over the internet?

question:
-I read that there is a network port in the back, but no network card. How the hell do you get the port to work? It seems like overkill to buy a seperate PCMIA network card. How do you activate the port?

Well, if anyone has any questions about the laptop or the deal, I'll get it probably sometime next week. So I'll let you guys know.

verytasty,

If you order from an online store/company that also has physical or 'brick & mortar' stores in your state, the online store has to charge you state sales tax. For example, Office Depot has both their online store and physical stores in just about every state, so when you order from Office Depot's online store, they will charge you sales tax. Ditto for BB, Staples, Circuit City, etc.

If it's not included in the OS, it's garbage as far as I'm concerned. I have software that I've purchased to do everything I want. Office 2K, Win XP, etc. I want a clean, simple, & fast OS installation. The fact that it's running XP Home is just another reason to nuke it.

If you live in a state that has sales tax, & BB has a physical presence in your state (don't they everywhere?), you pay sales tax. No tax for me, Oregon is nice that way.

They probably used the chassis of a machine that has a built in NIC, & simply left out the physical NIC to save money. If you can find the part on Ebay you might be able to activate it.

I think I want an X-Jack, but I'll look into it.

What's an X-Jack? Where do you buy it from, how much, what's so good about it?

X-Jack

The antenna is retractable, & slides inside the PCMCIA card. So when you're not using it you can keep it in the laptop without the bulky external antenna.

verytasty,
you can buy a PCMCIA network card to plug in the slot. The system will then recognize the card and you can plug the RJ-45 cable (network cable) to it.

And also, I was wondering if people who purchased this laptop from Office Depot before with $899.99 can do something about this...?

Thanks for the answers guys. Another question: Has anybody bought it already online from bestbuy.com? I did. I went to the Best Buy in my local area and applied for the BB card so I could get the 6 months same as cash stuff. I ordered online from the store and didn't print anything out because I expected to get confirmation via email. I ordered about 3 hours ago and nothing has been sent to my email. Is this standard BB policy to not send email confirmation or what?

Why you don't go to CC and price match with CompUsa $ 899 and take the $ 200 rebate for a final of $ 699. I'll try tomorrow.

what would be the purpose of that? You'd still pay the same final price. Same sales tax, same shipping (probably). Plus with BB you only have to deal with one rebate, as opposed to two.

verytasty,

not to make you nervous, but I did order it online and got a confirmation email about 15 minutes later. Maybe because you applied for their credit card?

I ordered from BB while I was still at work, & I have not received a confirmation e-mail yet. That was probably 5 hours ago.

My order shows as in progress, I'm not particularly worried about it.

Yeah, I just looked my account info up and it says my order is "submitted." Viper, did you use a BB credit card too? I just signed up today and also checked for the mastercard that comes with it. Apparently, if you sign up for the mastercard you get a 25 dollar gift certificate from BB. Can you use the 25 gift cert. on the laptop if you bring it to the counter later?
