<< I ordered from BB while I was still at work, & I have not received a confirmation e-mail yet. That was probably 5 hours ago.

My order shows as in progress, I'm not particularly worried about it.

I feel bad, because of my sig you're going to be $700 poorer now.

Oh well enjoy the laptop. We expect a FULL report after you get it, do a clean install of XP Pro and transfer your 14.9 GB of pr0n.

If I decide to keep it (which I'm 99% certain I will), I will give a full report. Pics, benchmarks, everything.

If it helps anybody they can PayPal me $10 to defray my costs of reading your sig.

I bought this Laptop yesterday at Circuit City. Paid more. Buuhhh.
Here are somethings I foundout.

I. Integrated Network Card???

It has a Network slot, which is blocked by a plastic dummy. I took it out and foundout that there is a lan interface. XP home doesn't show any network card, neither does Whistler (Beta).
The Bios doesn't give an option for it.

Does anyone know if the network card can be activated? Drivers? New Bios?

II. Graphics Card / Gaming

I ran some DVD's on it and it looked fine. Than I intstalled Fifa 2002. It simply flickers. I don't know if this is because of just the 8mb.

Does anybody know about this problem ?

Tks.

I'm tempted by the 1805-177 they have on the site.
It is $899 with no rebate.

Advantages:
1.13 Ghz, 67Mhz faster
20 GB HD, 5GB more
10/100 NIC - Big advantage
LiIon battery - Really big advantage

Unknowns:
Cyberalladin T graphics chip with 16MB of memory (I'm pretty sure it is shared)
1 less usb port, but has a serial port (nice for those of us who need to connect to terminals)

Does anyone know about this graphics chip?
I can't find this laptop anywhere including toshibas site.

chibimike,
i don't think the 1805-177 model makes much of a difference from the 1000-S157. For $200 less, it will suffice as a laptop. You can just get a PCMCIA NIC card for around $10-15 dollars.

I'm hearing some people from FW saying the toshiba rebate is not valid if you don't purchase from their stores.
Can any one confirm the $100 rebate valid for all the stores?

Thanks

FSB is 100Mhz on 1805-S177 but 133Mhz on 1005-s157
Does that mean I see better performance on 1005-s157?

The LiIon battery is a big deal to me NiMH batteries can be a serious pain in that you have to run them down before recharging.
I also much prefer the built in NIC, want to use the cpmcia slots for firewire and a wireless card for work.

Does anyone know how the CyberAlladin compares to the 830? Pretty sure both are shared memory.

Hmm. I didn't notice the 100Mhz system bus. So the 1805 is only a 1.1Ghz, not 1.13.

Best Buy folks told me that they are not sure if the rebate counts. If you look on the rebate form it doesn't give you any restrictions regarding where the notebook has to be purchased from. So be carefull and make sure that you get the rebate.

That is not true. Both Lithium Ion and Nickel Metal Hydride can be recharged at any time without first completely discharging. I believe your are thinking of Nickel Cadmium batteries. They DO require a complete discharge occasinally to prevent the "memory" effect causing the battery to not get a full charge.
Lithium Ion's advantage is that it generally has a longer run time.

Is the complete model number Toshiba Satellite 1805-S177? If so, that's a great deal because BestBuy.com shows the price as $899.99 (click BUY to see the price).

I'd definitely pay $100 more and get this laptop instead, here's the specs from BB.com (notice the better components are in bold):
Intel® Celeron? processor 1.1GHz, with 100MHz frontside bus
256MB SDRAM for multitasking power, expandable to 512MB
14.1" TFT active-matrix display
20.0GB hard drive
DVD-ROM drive
Ali CyberAladdin-T graphics, with 16MB video memory
Integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN card
V.90 high-speed fax modem
Rechargeable, removable LiIon battery
Weighs 7 lbs./less than 1.8" thin for easy portability
Windows XP Home Edition operating system preinstalled

So for $100 more you get:
1.1GHz instead of 1.06GHz
20GB HD instead of 15GB HD
16MB VRAM instead of 8MB VRAM.
Integrated NIC instead of an empty slot
Lithium Ion battery instead of NiMH

It's a no brainer which is the better laptop plus no rebate hassle!

Kind of off topic

<< Nickel Cadmium batteries. They DO require a complete discharge occasionally to prevent the "memory" effect causing the battery to not get a full charge. >>

The key work is "occasionally." This whole battery thing about totally running down your batterires to eliminate memory effect has been so far blown out of proportion that it isn't even funny. Years ago camcorder magazine did a study on this and found the key wasn't letting it run down every time before recharging, but letting the battery sit in the charger constantly. This dribble charging caused the memory effect. Still it is good to occasionally run the batteries down with nickle cadmium.

Now on topic. For people who are interested, I did run Mad Onion 3D benchmark on this laptop. I used the LCD screen and got 600. I know gamers are screaming: OUCH, but very few notebooks, especially $700 notebooks are going to please gamers. BTW, while the framerate was low, the detail still looked good. Last years games will probably work OK. I don't want to get gamers mad, but I think a notebook should be used for "useful" stuff like writing, study, research, video or photo editing.

Probably, but a word of advice I hope you will heed DO NOT OPEN THE PACKAGE keep it sealed then it will be a still brand new, factory sealed, resellable retail product otherwise you may have to pay some BS restocking fee.

If I plan to return it I won't open it, but a restocking fee could negate the whole purpose of returning it.

Something else I noticed...

According to the Toshiba specs on the S157, it's a 256K cache/133 FSB model... Wouldn't that make it a Tualatin based Celeron? So basically it'd be a .13 micron Coppermine P3 @ 1066 Mhz... Whereas the other would be a 128 KB/100 MHz Celermine...

Personally I'd rather have the equivalent of a Coppermine P3 under the Celeron name than a 1.1 GHz Celermine.

I can not find any information about the 1805-S177 at www.toshiba.com. Also did a google search and the only hit was the one at Best Buy. Perhaps this model was made specically for Best Buy to sell. The graphic chip set sounds a lot better than the other model.
