Sucks working on a holiday, but making some extra bank has to be nice.

I thought there was a thread similiar to this in OT allready. but here goes.

My work rotation is suppose to end Monday, Dec 28 ( my work shift is 12 hours). After that i'll be home free to goof off and do what ever i want. Luckily for me, work is throwing a nice christmas day dinner and there is a drawing for prizes.

There may be. I jumped on here, scanned the first page perfunctorily, then created this thread.
Drillship, huh? Different than a Drill rig? I've watched some of the various shows RE:Heavy Metal / Salvage.... That sort of stuff with interest. Anything that involves extreme building or technology involved gets me going.

Well a drill ship is a type drilling a drilling rig. They are also usually really nice in terms of their accomadations compared to other classes of rigs. I've worked on Jack up rigs, moored semi-submersible rigs, dynamically positioned semi-submersible rigs and of course drill ships.

Here is a link of the vessel I work on.

My friend works on this moored semi-submersible rig.

I just finished up some e-mails, and it's off to bed. E-mails never stop after the godforsaken finals week.

Yeah its pretty cool. I mean everything is basically run off electricty in one way or antoher, except the genterators, of course.

My friend / co-worker is on the Discoverer Inspiration at them moment. He is someplace south of the Equator in the Atlantic. He boarded the ship in South Africa and is on the SA to Gulf of Mexico leg of the shiips journey from the South Korean Shipyard. Cool shit all around.

Just ate breakfast in the galley and they are starting to set up fo Christmas day lunch/dinner. They put out a 4 Gingerbread house Scene which includes a little sugar lake. It looked really bad ass.

We have about 15MW reserved for "hotel load" which includes sound and lights. 40MW for main propulsion, 10MW for auxiliary (bow thruster) propulsion for docking and anchorless positional maintenance.

A ship is a unique environment - electrical generation, distribution, and consumption all occur within a few hundred feet! Keeping it running smooth, safe, and maintaining comfort for thousands of people is no easy task!

A ship never sleeps so something is always going on no matter what the calendar says. That's why I'm working on Christmas day. ()

Rubycon, what do you do again? Was it something entertainement with the cruise industry??

Yeah, working deepwater oil exploration is pretty dang cool. What i think is pretty bad ass is the amount of wind and see some of these vessel can withstand. Obviously if the weather warrents it, they will suspend drilling ops, evac non essentials (like me) and move from location if possible. Back in august, i was on the rig while it moved from one part of the Gulf of Meico to another. That was quite cool. Chugging along in the dead of night.

The general rule is if it moves, emits light or sound and runs on electricity and is for the purpose of entertaining people then I'm involved.
