Stinky chicken houses...

Hey all,

Me and my family have been living in our home in North Carolina for about 30, I have been living here for all of my 22 years of life. A few years ago, a "neighbor" down the road sold land behind our house to someone to build chicken houses. Well a year after clearing the land and building, everything was done and operating. Well, then the smell started. It is a really rank smell but back then, when it was under a different owner, you would usually only smell it in the afternoons and it wasn't TOO bad (although still very annoying). Well, a few years passed and nothing was said or done and we (and all the other neighbors around here) dealt with it. Recently from my understanding, the owner sold the chicken houses, to someone else who is operating them. This was probably late last year sometime. Now, this summer rolls around, and the smell is totally unbearable. We have been smelling them about ALL day/night everyday for the past few weeks to a month or more and it is the worst during mid-day and afternoon. I understand that they have to keep those stupid chickens cool, but this smell is really unbearable. You can't even walk out the door or open the windows at night without the smell infiltrating the house. You can't be outside and inhale deeply. I'm embarrassed to bring anyone over to the house anymore because of it, and I personally, am about sick (almost literally) of it.

My question is, is there ANYTHING that can be done to at LEAST get these guys to only leave their fans on that is pointing toward the thick woods where there is no one living or can anything else be said/done? EPA? Anything?

Also should be noted, that the chicken houses are probably a few hundred feet through the woods behind our house and some of the trailers through the woods from our house are even closer. We are not in any city zone to my knowledge either.

Have the court declare it a public menace and either closed down or cleaned up. You were there before them. There is no way they have the legal right to stink up the whole area.

Your other option is to sue them for the value of your house and move.

That would be great, but I hate to start anything. The original owner is an OK guy. I have no clue who he sold it too though. Suing would be out of the question because my parents would never go for it.

ask a lawyer in your area about nuisance laws.

Buy yourself a few pigs and outsmell them?

You will eventually hardly even notice the smell from the chickens though.

Well then I guess you move. Oh wait... nobody is going to buy a house that sits behind a stinky chicken farm. So I guess you suffer until you can't take it anymore, flip out, kill the chicken guy and all his chickens and burn the place to the ground. There ya go.

Call the news.

That'll get them shut down.

That can't be good to be breathing in that chicken crap particles all the time.

Actually they may. It depends on the zoning where he lives. Also there can be other documents supporting this.
