Stock AMD heatsink and fan?

Just got my 3500+ Winnie and im wondering if i should use the stock heatsink/fan. Seems a bit cheap since there is no need for arctic silver, looks like it has some kind of "pad" which is bad IMHO. I plan to do some moderate OCing, but nothing extreme. I have a few days since my case doesnt arrive until Friday. The thing is that any non-stock cooler voids my warranty, no?

Use the stock heatsink, pad and all. They put Shin-Etsu paste on there which is 95% as good as Arctic Silver 5.

yeah. the paste is expensive as hell and good to boot. the stock fan will easily help you oc to 2500 and up to 2700+

I would just grab some AS5 anyway, you'll always need it. IMHO, a pad never does as well as thermal paste, and if you're already using the stock heatsink, I'd just use AS5 to get some more head room :thumbsup:

Scrape off the pad and use Ceramique or AS5, your warranty will stay fine and your temps will improve drastically.

The pad is good, but not reusable. If you fire it up, the pad melts, and you take the heatsink back off... better have some AS5 handy to put on after you scrape off the goop.

Out of the box, the AMD fan (despite it's small size) and pad are actually pretty darn decent.

Ive got the 3200 winchester and was wondering the same thing. I have used AS3 in the past but I think I will go stock for now.

I've used nothing but the stock heatsink and fan with the pad that is factory mounted to the heatsink. I've seen my CPU temp as low as 31C with cool 'n' quiet enabled. The max load temp at 2595MHz (236*11) overclock in my sig is 53C. No need to pay extra for an aftermarket HSF.

the stock HSF is fine. I use an XP 90 but cannot say it wouldn;t do as well with a stock HSF. Case conditions and PSU are way more important. Good airflow in the case especially...

I'd use the stock heatsink if I wasn't nuts about low noise and still running Folding@Home 24\7.

Absolutely you can OC with the stock cooler. These Winchesters often don't need a ton of voltage, so even with a lot of speed the temps stay manageable. They are a well designed, cool-running CPU (relatively speaking). My temps are in the mid 50's w/100% load @ between 2600-2700 MHz (have to back off a bit during games-damn AGP lock bug!) with the stock cooler and the AV8 is said to poll temperatures too high, so it's probably cooler than that though I have no way to check.

I'm using the stock heatsink and fan on my 3500+ (including the pad). Right now im at 2.6 ghz at 1.54 volts. Coming in around 52C under load.

Seems like the stock AMD heatsink/fan combo is pretty decent.
