stock voltage on a R9-280X?

Hey guys, I bought my R9 280X used, and I was wondering what the stock voltage on a reference model should be.

It's a PowerColor R9 280X (not the factory overclocked unit) and I found that the stock voltage is 1.075v, which seems to be a bit low.

Reason I ask is I'm trying to find out if the BIOS was flashed by the previous owner for mining purposes. Not that it matters really, I used MSI afterburner to set the voltage up to 1.15V on stock clock settings and all is well. At the stock voltage in the BIOS, games would randomly freeze.

On another note, these PowerColor 280x's do not take well to memory clock/voltage increases, nor do they show any positive effects on benchmarks. I can get the core clock up to 1170 at 1.3V, which seems to be ok.

There is no stock voltage, they range from something like 1V to 1.2V with most around 1.1V or so. These settings are determined at the factory based on chip quality. This change was made years ago, I think starting with the HD6xxx series but I can't remember for sure. Before then, there was a uniform default voltage, or at least just 1-2 stock voltages instead of a lot more than that.

However, if a card freezes at default voltage that's odd. It may be that they flashed BIOS to undervolt it at lower clocks than what you set it to, which is ok, but otherwise it's troubling that you have to crank it up. Then again 1.15V is within the realm of normal voltage and not much to worry about.

Aren't official AMD BIOSes signed? If so, would it be possible to dump the BIOS and see whether the signature is intact?

The BIOSs are signed, but apparently the voltage/clock speed component isn't.

There are variety of BIOS editors for the 280X and 7 series cards that can change the voltage/clock speed and leave the signature intact.

my voltage max out at 1.043. (running 1000/1500)
Using Diamond 280x. I bought my card used. do you think the previous owner did something to it?

Mine XFX DD 7970 Ghz Ed has 1.169v default
If go to low on v then you will be missing Performance badly
For 280X is 1.180v on 1000/1500 but if you want OC it a little eg. 1100/1600 (should be OK and not so Hot) you have to put 1.216v

I tried to pull a 1100/1600 it frozed on me after 5 min of gaming. lol I can't tune my voltage (afterburner), so it could be locked.

If it was used in mining it was probably undervolted. My 280x WF3 run undervolted @ stock - 1100mhz 1.075v.

If you're going to buy cards from mining I highly recommend Gigabyte WF3 cards.
They won't OC very high but they're sturdy as fuck.

Don't ever listen to anyone about "safe" voltages. I did, and now GPU is screwed. Just test it yourself or toss it.

AMD spec is up to 1.25, so that has to be normal.

That's what I was told and was the highest I ever went with my 7950, but it seems like that killed it despite being at stock most of the time. (Well, it's not dead yet, but even at stock it can't play games for more than hour if v-sync is off)

Sounds like it was either run too hard or had a tiny defect from the factory. Only way I've ever killed a card (AMD or nvidia) is when I cranked my hd 7770 to 1400Mhz core and like 1500Mhz memory. It wouldn't maintain clocks and instead of reducing clocks I upped voltage to 1.3.
It then died a glorious death running almost as many frames as a 7850.

Gigabyte 280X 1.18V 1100/1500.

On my XFX 7850 I went up to 1.21V in order to OC it a little.

TIP- if you can't unlock voltage on a card, try Sapphire TRIXX, I couldn't unlock it on the 7850 and after using TRIXX I was able to.
