today, while driving to work, a stone hit my windshield (70mph?) and put a chip and crack. it is less than the size of a $ bill, but it is near a corner/edge.

damn, now I have to get quotes and all that.

</rant>

edit - called insurance already, they said - if it has to be replaced, then they will only cover up to (minus deductible) what a NON TOYOTA quote is for it. just for kicks I called the toyota dealer - he quoted around $900+ for it!

btw, this is a 2010 toyota corolla.

edit2 - the crack that was smaller than a $ bill, is now more than a foot long.

looks like full replacement now.

safelite wants $300 + may be some extra for it. my deductible is $250. so, i am at least out that much.

is it worth to go with safelite, or find cheaper local alternatives?

Insurance? If the crack is that big, the windshield will need to be replaced.

depending on state inspection criteria, some states allow cracks that are not in the field of vision to not be repaired
if it is an older car, maybe you just ignore it

You might be able to get someone to fill and patch it. I have had several dings on my windshield patched. It prevents the ding from growing and you really cannot tell anything ever happened.

yep, at this point i am hoping it can be repaired. as many pointed out, I think my insurance will fully cover it - if it can be repaired.

i will have to spend $$$, only if it has to be replaced.

Why should you have to pay for it (other than your deductible)? Don't you have comprehensive on your insurance policy?

some states/policies include glass coverage outside the deductible for comprehensive and in some cases you have to meet the deductible for glass

so depending on that, since most people have a $100,$250,$500 deductible on comprehensive, he may have to pay a portion of the deductible

OP needs to check his policy

If it's already cracked that much, it's likely just going to get worse. Repairs only really work on initial chips. A crack that is 4" already will continue to spread.

Definitely check around on quotes though. I've had a couple windshields replaced and it's a $350-$400 job. A Corolla is not a big car. Should be at the lower end of replacement costs.

I literally just had my windshield replaced last week on my 2001 GMC Sonoma (baller, I know) and it was $165 including tax and labor.

How much does it typically cost to get a knick patched? Pretty sure I got one the other day when this big ol' dump truck kicked a stone up.

Luckily for me, Alabama does not have car inspections. Unluckily for me, Alabama does not have car inspections. Some of the cars around here literally scare me as I'm on the road with them... no bumpers... no hoods... no problem!

yes, my insurance covers it minus deductible - but only a NON MANUFACTURER rate (since the original manufacturer rates are much higher).

Discount Auto Glass. They had the best reviews in the area and a week later I can say I'm certainly not disappointed.

When I was in Arizona it was free. Seriously. They had attendants at the very large gas stations that would come out to your car while you were filling up your gas tank.

I recently had a chip in my Sienna that I took to Joliff on a whim. Was a $65 repair there.

Toyota uses PPG windshield..just goto a place that sell this brand, it would be the same windshield without the Toyota logo.

I've seen some newer windshield replacements with this weird "wavy" effects when looking at them from an angle.

I'd go apeshit if I got one of those installed.

i had a rear window replaced and the view out the back through the mirror was noticeably warped a bit by the replacement. $180 or so. cost more to get the little triangle in the door replaced after a break in.

Some states require the windshield to be replaced with no deductible if yo have comprehensive. Others allow the deductible.

Safelite is has been good for me; they are a national chain.

Problem with a local shop is that warranty is useless if you are out of the area.

I paid twice for my Pontiac in '07 as a result. Went to a local shop because they were local. They willing to honor the warranty if I brought the windshield back. I was 3000 miles away and not coming back for 4 months. Pictures and statements from another auto glass shop were not acceptable .
