Hitler and the Nazis weren't left wingers- they did adopt elements of state socialism though- socialism ISN'T strictly the benevolent lovey-dovey thing it's made out to be (mostly by westerners), it's simply a political system that can be adopted by brutal regimes and democratic ones alike. There has never, by the way, been a true communist system, merely communist ruling parties in regimes with totalitarian state-socialist political systems. True communists believe socialism is merely a logical stepping stone to communism, but no one has ever gotten there.
At the fringe extremes, the left and right aren't really much different from each other, unless one wants to argue somehow it's better to be sent to your death in a gulag for the wrong speech vs. a concentration camp for being of the wrong ethnic group or religion. Of course, if going by sheer death-count and amount of destruction- the far left wins by orders of magnitude.
