Hi,

I am a research student and work with fMRI. We are looking for a storage device that can store all the data that we have collected. I want to start off with a 1TB drive (with RAID 5) with options to add more space later. I want it to be accessible from other computers so that we can download and analyze the appropriate data when necessary. Can someone please recommend some hardware that will accomplish those goals? Thanks.

How much are you looking to spend? Enterprise-class storage starts at about $25,000-30,000. If that's way above your budget you're either looking at a much smaller NAS device or just a networked fileserver.

How expandable does it need to be (you want to "add more space" -- 2TB? 10TB? A petabyte?)

How much performance do you need? If you have a handful of other systems something with a single GigE port is probably okay, but if you want to hook up a hundred computers to your storage that won't be adequate.

Do you need integrated backup solutions, offsite replication, or snapshotting capabilities?

Matthias, my hat's off to you. When someone posts (especially a member from 2001) an open-ended question such as this, I give them a simple open-ended answer. I call this "Pulling Teeth" (having to drag the information out), and they probably haven't done any research. These threads usually turn-out like "Oh, you mean it costs more than $1.99?" I don't mind helping those who help themselves, but you go above and beyond.
This Buds for you!

Hmm... must be getting soft. I'll have to throw in more bitter comments next time about searching first and not providing any information.
