The new Raptor has ended any debate as to who the fastest ATA drive is. In fact, those of you looking to pick up cheap refurb 15K drives will find you bought at best the 2nd fastest drive on the market. WD is going to release a clear cover version of the drive later this year. The drives are SATA 150 as was speculated earlier, though that has no adverse affect on the performance of the drive.

Here's the review:

Thanks for the link. I'd love to have one, as I like my 74gb raptor. But for $300. I'll wait until they are available used for cheaper.

For the single-user this looks pretty damn killer.. albeit pricey. - That said, I doubt very seriously if you'll see these appear in an enterprise enviroment.

For those of us that have spent $300 or more on new 18/36GB SCSI drives looking for the best in hard drive performance, $300 for a 150GB is a bargain. Though I have no need for 150GB, getting one of these and shortstroking it down to 30 or 40GB would make a very nice boot drive.

A window on a hard drive?

Hope you don't put anything private on that drive.

For $300 I'd buy the drive but not the clear version. I'll probably go with the 74Gb version though because I doubt the 150Gb will be availble by the time I'm ready to order my next build. The 74Gb will do me fine for my next system so no biggie.

Read the review.. on top of the drives already being shipped, the performance increase over the 74gig is quite significant. - I have no plans whatsoever to move to Raptor storage but if I were there'd be no doubt I'd go w/ the 150 model over the 74.

the only reason (for me) i would buy a 15K scsi hdd is seek time and nothing can compare to it, plus i buy 36GB scsi hdds because i use them as my system/app/game hdd only. so 15krpm scsi still wins (except in price when compared to other 146GB hdds)

Finally. I would take this drive over ALL OTHERS even at a budget cut somewhere else in the system simply because the HD is the SLOWEST part of any computer. Faster the HD, the speedier everyday tasks and performances.

So a clear window is what they had to take out of the article due to NDA?

Wow, that will really look impressive in my plain Lian Li aluminum case that doesn't have a window. It definitely would be worth an additional $50 (or however much)... </sarcasm>

- It is just about the same $/GB as the 74GB version. For people who have FOUR 74gb raptors, this sure would help save space... or at least provide more space for larger hard drives

Boy! I?d like to have that 150GB one, and I don?t mind spending the 3 hundred dollars for something good, but how am I to know if the Western Digital drives are as good as what I think the Seagates are? Are they? I don?t know. Which drive manufacture can I depend on to protect my precious work?
