You wot? Anything that's stored on a hard drive isn't safe. If you want information on relliability then head over to the storage review forums and look at the reliability survey.

If you are going to buy this and you don't have a clear case then get the enterprise version.

Sigh!

Bobthelost, I didn?t think I needed to be that explicit.

Yes, I back up all of my work on both the Internet and CDs and I don?t intend to buy the one with the window in it.

This is the one I may want:
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive ? OEM $299.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136012

or, perhaps this one:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive ? OEM $108.00

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822148065

But never mind, thanks.

This drive kicks behind. Its got much higher platter density, native SATA interface, and its significantly faster than the 74g version.

Old Man River:
Raptors have quite a large MTFB (especially this new one, I think it was like 1.2 million hours or some such), and they have a 5 year warranty (just like seagate). They are pretty reliable.

Thanks for the link. I'd love to have one, as I like my 74gb raptor. But for $300. I'll wait until they are available used for cheaper.

Not going to happen any time soon if much at all. Its same price per gig as the 74g, and when was last time you saw the 74g raptor drop in price?

Finally. I would take this drive over ALL OTHERS even at a budget cut somewhere else in the system simply because the HD is the SLOWEST part of any computer. Faster the HD, the speedier everyday tasks and performances.

Totally correct. Hdd is slowest since it has moving parts. HDD access is in ms, memory access times are in ns (or has it changed up to ps?).

So is a Raptor 150 really faster than a 15k Seagate Cheetah?

Not the 147gb variant, or not much faster, but faster than a 74gb variant, yes.

All for single user apps, Server useage patterns are different.

Wow, if that's the case, then I'm crossing the 147 gig 15k Cheetah off my Dream Parts list and adding the Raptor 150

Sorry i'll expand, the 147gb fujitsu MAU and the seagate 15k cheetah 147gb both edge out the Raptor in most single user benchmarks and tests. However the Raptor 150 is faster than smaller 74gb SCSI drives.

For ultra fast SCSI still wins, but you really do need a lot of cash for the win.

I think his point was that the Raptor simply crushed the Cheetah in 3 out of the 5 single user tests (average margin 44%), including both multiapplication suites while losing by a significantly smaller margin in 2 of the game tests (6%). It also beat the Mau in the same 3 tests, which means neither drive "edged out the Raptor in most single user benchmarks and tests."

So basically his point was, you are wrong.
