Storing tires

I need to store some tires on rims for about 3 months, I have them lying flat on the floor. I do remember something about flipping them to the other side occasionally is this true or is that just a thing old guys would say in the 80s?

I suspect that is an old mechanics tale.

[tinfoilhat]I put mine on painted concrete or a sheet of cardboard because concrete is somewhat alkaline and I don't want to roll the dice on that affecting the rubber in my tires. [/tinfoilhat]

Practically no weight on them so don't worry a bit and no need to flip.

The whole out of round/flat spot thing was mostly years ago with bias ply design tires. Cheap bias ply tires still are used for trailers, but most of your trailers are now shipping with trailer radials.

Modern materials in tires pretty much alleviates most concern over flat spots. I've let my trailer sit for four months in one spot... No flat spots. I have a trike that has sat for four months over winter... No flat spots.

Those all had weight on them too.

Whenver I swap out my all-season and winter tires for the season, I store them in my basement. I lay them flat and stack them two-tall on top of some cardboard. The winters get stored for about eight months and I've never had problems.

I store them in my garage lying flat, on top of each other, in plastic bags. This is for about 6 months. Don’t seem to have issues.

My snow tires were stored on the garage floor, standing up side by side, each in an unsealed plastic bag for 3 years. Just remounted them.
No issues whatsoever.

Having said that, a nice stack of tires on top of a piece of plastic would be the way to go.

Put them on tire tree if you are concerned. Me I wouldn't care. Weight of 1/4 of a car >>>>> 3 tires on rim.

I have four sets of winter tires/wheels stored in my garage. From the small 225 to 295, I just stack them up 4 tall from Apr-Nov. Have been doing that for years, never any issue. Never bother to turn or doing anything special.
