He's probably concerned about chemicals leaching from the plastic. Not unreasonable imo, but not something I worry about much. If I worked a place that allowed kitchen appliances at the desk(sounds like they do at his place), I'd just get a burner, and a regular tea kettle.

That's it. But I'm "this" close to just saying f*** it: I drink coffee out of cups with plastic lids and eat out of plastic take out trays. Not dead yet...
And no, they don't allow kitchen stuff at desks. People in charge are just very lax about it. Others don't want to offend their coworkers -- I ratted the jackass beside me out cause I don't care anymore. I put up with his shit for 4 months.
Thanks for all the input, i'm thinking i will get a nice small enamel kettle for home use and then an electric one for work. haven't decided which ones yet.
