Yeah, it is interesting. I wonder if you could do some studies with mice and see how they fare in a similar environment. Set up some instruments and see what the oxygen and heat levels are during flight.

If a human CAN hibernate in a sort of way like this....that would be an extremely cool thing to explore.

he's the lucky 26 survived.

Doesn't sound so lucky to me.

It was -50 degrees for most of the flight and he was severely deprived of oxygen, meaning he could end up with brain damage when all is said and done.

Of course, that could just be piling on considering he was dumb enough to try this.

He survived in the same way a person who drowns in freezing water or undergoes cardiovascular bypass surgery survives. His brain was cooled down enough to suppress metabolism to where it did not require much to operate. He is lucky to be alive and will probably develop some brain deficits as a result - hopefully temporary but possibly permanent....

Albeit disoriented, it sounded like he was pretty coherent after all was said and done; he was able to explain his situation to those around him. Sounds like he could potentially come out without too much damage.
