strage, pc will not shut down when pci modem is installed.

i was given the task to upgrade my cousins pc.......i put in a new MB and cpu....got everything running.......blah blah blah. long story short is that when ever the pci modem is installed, the computer will not shut down. start>shutdown, goes through the process of shutting down then right at the last min its like its about to shut down, but it just reboots. it keeps doing this every time i try. put once i take out the modem, everything is fine and it works ok. any ideas?

Is the PCI Modem not new? Maybe a few years old? My guess is it is not ACPI compliant. If it is new, a firmware update for the modem might help - if it has firmware.

well, its not that old because it did use to shut down before i upgraded the mb/ram. i did a fresh install.

Check for a wake on modem setting in the BIOS and turn it off.

In safe mode does it shut down OK?

Possibly a driver issue.

Most liikely. Probably just upgrading the Compel driver (or removing the filter driver) would fix the issue.

ive been trying to find drivers but i cant...........i mean i find them but cant, errors actually getting them.

What does that mean "errors actually getting them" - can you download new drivers or ??

i can find them but useally i can not download them because the links dont work cuz they are so old.

Remove the modem's filter driver, and then see if you can repro the problem. I suspect you won't be able to do so. Go into regedt32, then to hklm/system/currentcontrolset/class/4d36e96d-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318 (and check that the (Default) value is Modems) and then find the upper and lower filter values. Write them down, then remove the two values (on the right side, not the left) and then reboot the box.

Still have the same issues *after* you reboot?

its not a win thing, it happens in linux too. does anyone have any more ideas? i guess the modem just does not like the mb....
