Straight from TV to DVD recording

My brother said that his friend has tv tuner or maybe an all in wonder that burns tv shows straight to dvd. I was thinking it was a Leadtek win2000 something, or a all in wonder. Anyone heard of it cause I wanted to get one for my brother for christmas.

Wrong. Most capture cards can do software MPEG2 encoding. If one was okay with that level of quality (blech) then one could capture to MPEG2 then send that to an authoring or burning program. If you want to record straight to a physical disk, then buy a standalone DVD recorder. They're expensive though.

That aside...the Leadtek is a nice card. Pretty foolproof, great for beginners. Like I said, you can capture to VCD/SVCD/DVD compliant video then burn it without any special knowlege of video editing/converting software.

You mean without saving it to a hdd first? If so, then that's completely wrong.

I just bought an AIW 9600 and it comes with Pinnacle Studio which burns to CD/DVD and IMO is a hell of a lot better than Premiere. All I do is record the program, spend 2 minutes editing out the commercials, and burn it to CD. That card is one of the best purchases I've made. Not to mention that it comes with a voucher to download Half-Life 2 for free.
