Strange addiction to distributed computing.....

I think 2 of my computers are addicted to distributed computing...

I have a few computers running a couple different projects. Even though running at the lowest setting is fine for normal use, when you are running something really processor intensive (games, video editing) on the computer, it runs better without the distributed projects I've found.

So I uninstalled Eccp on two computers.

At which point they freeze up every few minutes now.

I spent 2 days trying to figure out what was happening. At which point I decided to reinstall eccp...and surprise! they worked fine now.

So I removed it again... same problem...installed dnet this time, fixed...

Has anybody else noticed this addiction?

I haven't noticed this because I've never uninstalled a DC project.

Well, I don't like to unistall, but unfortunately DC doesn't pay the bills ;-)

Only solution I've found is to leave it running....

Well...not so much remove, more like just stopping it for a little...

Actually, the software was still there, just not running....

Just turn the DC project off if you need to do something that uses up that much cashe. I think that is the only thing that a DC program uses that any other non-DC program needs. I have heard reports of SETI causing double tie compile time on some animation programs.

I used to turn it off when I played Tribes 2 ( online graffix intensive game ) but I just bought a better vid card

Strangly enough...I have seen this phenomenon myself!

I killed SETI on one of my linux rigs to compile some software, and next thing I know the powersupply decided to give out on me...I think these things are haunted.

When I uninstalled RC5, my hot tub got cold and my beer went flat.

Reinstalled, and everything was back to normal. I'll never do that again.

WholeMIlk, try letting the computer sit for a bit while off. It's possible, although unlikely that the CPU is having a hard time adjsting to the CPU going from hot to cool so quickly. I doubt this is it, but it's the best thing I can reccomend.

I've also never uninstalled a DC project, so don't know what the withdrawl symptoms would be like.
