Strange but important question regarding XP-90

The directions for a K8 XP-90 installation are a little strange. I have put together many machines before but I never had to do this.

It wants me to remove the stock RM and replace it with the one that comes with the XP-90, (the RM is the plastice piece in the MOBO to attach the heatsink to).

They want me to remove the stock RM by putting some nail polish remover on the sides of the RM to remove it from being glued to the MOBO. This process makes me a bit nervous, I don't want to damage the MOBO by removing this forcefully, but I also don't want to melt anything on the motherboard surrounding the RM from nail polish remover.

Has anyone here ever done this before??? Any help will be appreciated, I don't yet have most of my components in my new build shipped to me yet. Once I get everything I don't want to be to anxious to build it and screw something up like this.

The nail polis remover shouldn't hurt any of the circuits/components if a little gets on them. It really attacks the glue though

I had to swap out mine, and put on the zalman 7000cu parts. Though it was on an Abit AV8, I still didn't experience any problems.

You should have some backing plate as well, IIRC. To which the top plastic piece should be screwed down, sandwiching on the board creating tension for the heatsink.

Wow great advice everyone. I think I will try the Hair Dryer first and then go from there.

Is there anyone that actually has had experience doing this with the components I have first hand>>>DFI Ultra-D Nforce4 and ThermalRight XP-90

Or any other advice welcome!!!

CTom - just installed the XP-90 on a EPOX 9NPA Ultra board - unfortunately it was the most difficult part of my build.

Probelms to check before you start -

One of the arms of the connection hooks on the XP-90 was bent (one of the four hooks that attach to the RM) which unfortunately I didn't notice before I tried to install . . . had three arms attached and couldn't connect the fourth. Had to remove the XP-90, clean off the thermal paste, bend the arm in to the correct position, and start over. Needless to say the pressure needed to get the arms to click into the RM is a bit nerve wracking, so doing it twice is no good.

Also the screws Thermalright provided for the RM were too short - and the ones that connected the original RM on my mobo were too long to use with the XP-90 RM (they caused the board to bend slightly), so I had to travel down to my hardware store and buy two screws that were the right length.

However, I had no problem removing the mobo RM - it was not connected with glue to the board, all I had to do was unscrew it.

Good luck.

I helped my friend put together the exact same setup (NF4 Ultra-d + A64 3500+ + XP-90). We used Acetone (nail polish remover) and then wiped off the extra with a paper towel. Everything runs great.

Just make sure that you clean everything off before mounting the new RM.

Awesome dude, you ROXORZ. I do have one question for you though.

What did you use to clean the area after removing the old RM?? after you mounted the new RM did you run into any problems at all mounting the XP_90??

And for you my friend...enjoy

My DFI Ultra-D didn't have any adhesive holding the mount to the board, and popped right off...

Me too. I have both DFI NF3 and DFI NF4, both cradles came right off.
Am I missing something here?
I thought the adhesive was just on older boards.

Hey even better, I will hope there are only screws on it, that way I don't have to deal with the adhesive at all. The rest of my parts should be here this afternoon, I will let everyone know how it goes....Thanks to everyone.

The DFI nF4 Ultra board doesn't have any adhesive between the bracket and the board, it's just two screws.

I was suppose to take off a backplate wtf? What does this thing look like?
All I did was unscrew the regular heatsink bracket and screw on the x90 heatsink bracket.
It worked fine for me on a msi neo platnium and a dfi ultra-d.

Did I miss a step somewhere? I never did enjoy the smell of nailpolish.
