Strange crashing error...

Been having this problem for about a month now. Out of nowhere, the screen will go blank, my monitor power light begins to blink as if the computer had been turned off, then the sound locks up. Only way to get out of this is to do a hard power-down of the PC, then start back up. Seemingly happens at random. I'm at a loss here. I thought perhaps the videocard were dying, but it's only a few months old. I know my PSU is sufficient for this rig. Any ideas?

Also, if you have access, once monitor goes off and sound locks, see if you can remote into the PC. If not then you know the whole PC is frozen and it will like be a PSU issue, unless it is a heat issue. If it's heat the you should notice the lockup at the same timeframe after turning on your PC (ie. 15 minutes after you turn it on).

Kept AIM running while the PC did this strange lockup... I was able to hop on another PC and see my AIM still logged on for 30 minutes after the lockup... so it's not a complete lockup. Just video and sound. Any more ideas?

umm, it COULD be that your power coming into your house is going on and off, and your PS is going into power backup mode. do your lights flicker or anything when this happens? AIM's not a good indicator, because if you don't sign out, you can stay "signed on" for a long period of time after your computer goes off (like when it crashes). Try doing a remote desktop connection, or transferring a file over a network. what programs do you have running when this happens? Also, try making sure you don't have some wierd power saver setups. rightclick on your desktop. go to properties, go to screen saver, and click on power. Make sure you didn't have a friend that, as a prank or something, is making your computer go into sleep mode. Other than that, I'd say switch out the PS to be sure, and maybe even the CPU/RAM, JUST TO BE SAFE.

Ok, have ruled out power coming on/off in house, and it's not any kind of power surge. It's not "backup mode" on the PSU and it's not any power saver settings [I have them all turned off]. I thought it might be a bad DVI converter [the thing I need to plug my old analog monitor into one of the dual DVI ports on the videocard], because when I manually unplug it while the PC is running, I get the same "crash" effect. So switched out to a brand new converter... tried both DVI ports on the card... to no avail. Thought maybe it was bad ram, ran MemTest for several hours... zero errors. I'm at a loss here... could it be the monitor is going bad, as in losing the signal to the DVI converter and thus creating the "crash" that I get when I manually unplug it?

Yeah, xalar, I got the same problem, and just can't fix it. This weekend I'm dissasembling the whole rig, putting my mobo in the desk with all necessery components. Than I'm testing the RAM (which is brand new, so it's prolly OK), and of course the stability on my PS, which is also brand new, but a cheap 550W MAX power.

I'll let you know if I fix the problem.

get a not so cheap 400w and see if that does it.

Not a good idea to skimp on a psu, even if it isn't the cause of the present problem, it can lead to serious outlay in the future.

Welp, changed the error reporting in bios to speech, and now I get "System Failed VGA test" message when this "crash" occurs. Any ideas? Desperate for help here.

I wish, parasite. Although I did underclock my card, and have since then not encountered the problem [which was happening constantly before]. Not a perfect fix, but so far so good.

I am having the same problem with my MSI NX6200TC-TD64ES. I sent it back and they said nothing was wrong with it and gave it back to me, so I sent it back to them again and they sent me a new one. I tried the new one and it does the same thing still!!!!!! I thought it was going into Thermal Shutdown so I put on a CoolViva VGA cooler and that didn't work. Is it because PCIE is a fairly new technology?? Help! How did you underclock it?
