Ok, i know the clicking noises that cause death to IBM 75GXP hard drives but mine just died without death noises....

I was installing something and it just went puf, shutdown... i restarted the computer and the hard drive isn't detected in bios, doesn't make any noise, nothing... looks like it doesn't have any power...

Anyone has this kind of hard drive died like this??

That's very strange, do you have any suggestions for recovering data inside this hard drive? Any app from IBM or something?

please help a desperate man

If it is indeed a dead hard drive then there is going to be little support for you from IBM.
If it is still under warrenty then you can send it back in but if not then it makes a great paperweight.

(If you really want your data) You can send it to a hard drive data recovery group. Just look it up on google.
but it will cost you anywhere from 300 to your house to get the info back.

I'm sorry to hear your story. That is exactly how nobody wants their hard drive to go. If it has to go, we would all like a little warning first.

You might be able to get an RMA from
Hitachi
but they want to know the error code produced by their HD fitness test before issuing an RMA, and if bios can't see your drive, then the software won't see it either :frown:

Advice: get the drive to post, somehow. I don't have any experience with dead HD data recovery, but I know Hitachi will honor deathstar RMA requests, if you jump through enough hoops for them.

Do a forum search for the "freezer trick", basically you seal it in a plastic bag and let it freeze for a few hrs, have everything ready to go, then quickly remove it, hook it up, and try to get it to work long enough to move the data you need to another drive.

If you are using an IBM 60GXP or 75GXP you should update your firmware to avoid the click of death. It was too late for my 75GXP which died several months ago but hopefully it will allow my 60GXP to last longer now that I've updated it. You can view the whole story at http://www.pheuron.de/deathstar.htm or here is his conclusion
"aftermath
update15.01.03: The cause of the deathstar disaster has come to be known. When a DTLA or IC35..AVER drive is operated many hours a day, chances are, that the heads will catch a bit of the platter's lubricant coating. This leads to the well known 'noisy' bad sectors and error 0x70. To avoid this undesirable event, you can get a firmware upgrade for your
drive, that will move the heads around from time to time while idling. First you will need a firmware identification utility
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&q=DTLA&uid=psg1MIGR-44195 to determine the required version. Note that it will only detect drives on the motherboard IDE channels. After running this tool, you will have a log file stating the URL to get the required updater. After applying it, your deathstar should be safe [within the known limits of hard drives]. "

The 120 GXP is supposed to require an upgrade but the one IBM sent me to
replace my 75GXP didn't need it.
