Strange Intel 320 SSD behavior, is it dying?

I'm new to SSDs. I've never used one before and am quite excited to try one out finally.

I just received a used 80GB Intel SSD 320 Series from an eBay auction. Seller said it was tested good, however I think there's a problem with it. I have it installed into a Lenovo X200 Thinkpad. In BIOS I have SATA set to AHCI.

I was able to get Windows 7 installed on it, but when I boot into the OS the performance is inconsistent. At first stuff installed relatively quickly, but when I open applications it is slower than a standard spindle drive. The biggest and most serious problem is the lack of stability.

When Windows 7 is running there are these weird stuttering issues. If I play a video the audio becomes clipped and there's a static/buzz sound that causes the whole system to pause for a split second then resume. However, this doesn't last long as the computer will either freeze and go BSOD or restart without warning. I've been trying to install the Intel SSD Toolbox application, but now Windows won't even stay running long enough for me to get it installed.

Finally, I think I'm hearing a soft high pitched squeaking sound coming from the SSD when it is powered. It reminds me of the sound capacitors make when they go bad.

I'll try installing it into another system just to see if the X200 is the problem, but somehow I doubt it. The X200 works perfectly with a regular HDD at the moment.

Fortunately the SSD is still under warranty. How much effort is it to get it replaced? For those who have dealt with Intel's RMA process do you pay for shipping?

EDIT:

Weird, I'm using the SSD on an older Lenovo T61 Thinkpad. It seems to be working normally. I ran a Full Diagnostic Scan with the Intel SSD Toolbox and both the Read Scan and Data Integrity test completed successfully. It is limited to SATA1 speeds though.

The SSD still is making the soft squealing noise though.

Yes its faulty drive, but I might try to test it on regular desktop just for sure. The controller is dying.

On your foray into the exciting world of SSD's, why did you buy a used 80GB 320?
