I've got a strange problem maybe someone can shed some light on.
Built my system in April 2007.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed my game framerates plunging. After swapping out video cards, it was discovered that it was either a ram issue or a heat issue. I originally had 2gb of Transcend pc6400 ram in the system. Replaced it with a buddy's 2gb spare set of G-skill pc6400 ram. Closed her back up and tested. Framerate issues disappeared until the next day. Opened the case up and ran a day with the side vented out. Everything ran great. I put the original Transcend ram back in, along with the G-skill, for 4Gb (1gb x 4). The problems returned immediately.
So, I was thinking along with the heat issue, the Transcend ram was giving out. I bought a new cpu and case fan and 4gb (2gb x 2) of Corsair pc6400 ram. I put the new ram in last night, and the problem immediately returned again.
Results:
2gb (2 x 1gb) Transcend ram --> Framerate problems.
2gb (2 x 1gb) Gskill ram --> Currently running fine.
4gb (4 x 1gb) Transcend and Gskill ram --> Framerate problems
4gb (2 x 2gb) Corsair ram (brand new) --> Framerate problems
I still have the heat issue, but I'm putting new fans in, so that isn't a concern right now. I'm stumped as to why different ram, in different configurations, is causing this problem. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
If it helps, I'm running a C2D 4300 overclocked to 3.0ghz on a Gigabyte 965 DS3 board.
