strange network shows up in network panel neighbor maybe?

Hello all



I have a question im running windows 8 on a hp pavilion elite hpe time warner wifi and a arris wireless router, The thing is sometimes during the day a strange network name pops up on my network panel the one with the lines ||||, it says BRIGHTSTAR91-PC_Network it shows like I am able to connect to it but it is pw protected, is this just a cpu process or am I picking up on someone's close by signal if so how do I figure out who.

It sounds like your computer is telling you there is a wireless network nearby, and asking if you want to connect to it (which you can't without the password). Normal Windows operation.

make sure no one is connecting into your network via your wireless

im trying to do that because 4 or 5 networks show up up like att204 att308 wififirsu and the brightstart91 not sure if they are actual people or some computer background process


how should I go about seeing if its people or not?

If these people show up in windows explorer under NETWORK when you click the drop down panel...
This means that they are on the same subnet you are on, OR/AND you are in the same homegroup as they are.

FOR EXAMPLE:
My samba server shows up in network on the box I am on right now.
This is because it is connected to this side of my network, not one of the other 3 subnets I have running.
My room mate also shows up here, because he is on my local network.

just sounds like your wireless adapter is picking up other nearby wireless networks

this is pretty standard stuff and nothing to worry about

you can post a screen shot if you want a more certain opinion
