I live in the dorm of one university and two computers of mine connect to lan. They don't share the internet through a router or hub, at least in my living place. I just plug the computers to the network jacks on the walls. Originally, two computers work fine. Today, I don't know what happened, one of the computer can't access the internet any more, suppose that we call it "A". I can't ping, telnet outside and browse the web. But I can access the files in another computer(call this one "B"). I guess that they are in the same workgroup. SO I think the network card should be OK. I decided to connect "A" to the jack where "B" connects. Through "A", I still can't access outside, meanwhile, through "B" computer, I can. What happened to "A" computer? Was "A" computer infected virus? Please help me figure this out.

There are two main possibilities....here they are:

1. Your computer is having problems with TCP/IP and it needs to be reinstalled/installed. To do this you'll need to go to your network properties and remove it, reboot and reinstall it, or install it (if missing) and reboot.

2. Your campus is out of IP addresses or is running DHCP with restrictions. DHCP is the service run by the network administrators on your campus that give you IP addresses. There is a good chance that they're trying to limit the number of accounts. DHCP can be "adapter" specific as well. This means they may expect computer A to be online and know it's network card number (all have a unique number) and if they don't know about computer B, they may not have it setup on the admin side.

I hope this helps....I'd definitely give the TCP/IP thing a check. Otherwise, call your computer dept and ask them about their policies...they're usually pretty eager to help if you ask nice and explain that you don't wanna cause any problems for em...(just to butter em up)

Thanks a lot!. I uninstalled and installed TCP/IP, the problem still exists. I will call the help desk to ask them!
