I recently disassembled the PC in my sig for cleaning and to sell some parts. This is how my problem started. I have two 980 ti kingpins with water blocks. I wanted to put one back together with the air cooler to put in my wife's PC. So long story short I put the stock cooler back on and installed the KINGPIN in my wife's PC.(ASUS X-99a mobo; I7 5820k; Corsair Dom Plat 16gb 2800Mhz; Lepa G1600)
When I started it up all was good at first, Then I started "Witcher 3" to test out the system. As soon as the game finished loading in I heard this strange 'zapping/buzzing' noise. When the GPU is under full load it starts. I instantly thought it was the GPU, because the sound seemed to be coming from the VRM area of the card. So I tried installing the water-block again and made a temporary loop. The sound persisted. I even went so far as to file an RMA with EVGA, but it gets worse...
I was told to try a different PSU before the RMA. I was so convinced it was the card that caused it, I was kind of blinded. I then tried an AMD R9 290 in the system, and guess what; there is still an audible yet quieter sound. So i transferred the CPU, RAM, and GPU to my Rampage V motherboard and Corsair ax1500i PSU. This is where I get frustrated. The strange sound follows.... Now it had me thinking it is the CPU maybe shorted and causing VRM's to whine.... I did get it to stop one time when I turned off the top PCI slot and put the R9 290 in the 3rd PCI slot down and used a different power rail from the PSU.
The sound seems to be coming from the VRM area of any card I've tried so far. So the only common thing is the CPU at this point I think. I have also made sure that fans and other peripherals are not the problem. I have literally spent days of troubleshooting on this with little to no results.
My thoughts are: Maybe it is the CPU somehow or.... Maybe the GPU was shorted and somehow damaged the CPU or PCI lanes on both motherboards... Could a shorted graphics card do this? Could a damaged card damage other parts of a system? This is very frustrating.
The only thing that sucks is I sold my 5960x, so I only have one processor that fits the x99 socket at this point.
I know this is a long and drawn out story, but any thoughts are welcome.
