Strange problems on IP35 Pro

Here are the parts: e8400, IP35 Pro, 2x2GB mushkin DDR2-800, 9600GT, 320GB Seagate, Vista Ultimate x64.

Got it all built this evening and fired it up (moved hdd from old setup, e6400 on IP35-E). Vista threw a fit but after two reboots it reactivated without any problems and settled down and everything seems to be working fine.

Except for my keyboard. Which won't work when plugged into any of the USB ports on the back of the system. Works fine plugged into any of the four ports on the front of the case.

I also noticed one other issue. When I tried to OC a bit (9x400) the system hangs before trying to load Windows (never makes it to the swoosh screen) and refuses to load. I will try some lower level overclocking but I'm going to be mighty disappointed if I can't even reach 3.6GHz with this cpu.

Any suggestions on either problem?

EDIT: One more thing. My AC Freezer 7 Pro cycles up and down almost every time I do anything. Open a new browser window: cycles up then down. Open email window: cycles up then down. Etc etc. Annoying as hell. Any suggestions? The stock fan on my e6400 on the IP35-e never did this...

Good morning bump.

And the fan cycling is driving me crazy! I started F@H, which runs fine, but now the fan cycles up/down continuously. I'm going to swap for the heavier copper hsf from my e6400 this evening and see if that makes any difference, unless you guys know of a BIOS setting or something I need to change to eliminate this blasted fan cycling.

I had a similar problem with my USB mouse, but I didn't try the front ports. Out of habit, I reset to failsafe defaults in BIOS before my first boot, and this caused most on-board features to be disabled, including the USB ports. I can't remember where exactly the settings are, but go into BIOS and make sure that all onboard peripherals are enabled.

Maybe your chip's default voltage is very low. Follow an overclocking guide to increase various BIOS settings to potentially boost your overclock.

My AC Freezer 7 Pro also fidgets a bit, but I don't notice it at all when my case is closed. Run Folding@Home to keep your CPU loaded and the fan will probably stay on steadily.

Strange that the front ports work. Check the BIOS, both to make sure all features are enabled, but also look for the item called something like "USB Keyboard Supported by:" where the options are BIOS or OS. Set it to BIOS.

Freezing at the loading screen means some component needs a voltage boost, or timings relaxed. It's your first sign that an overclock is unstable.

The fan is responding to the load on the CPU, but it shouldn't be this sensitive. All I can think is to make sure it's plugged into the CPU Fan header (1" to the right of the socket) rather than an auxilliary plug. Or if it is, experiment with an aux jack just to see what it does.

Thanks for the responses, but I've already tried most of those things.

-USB supported enabled and set to BIOS control. When plugged into rear USB ports, the "extra" buttons on my keyboard function correctly (Calculator button launches Windows calculator, volume buttons work, etc) but none of the standard letter keys or number pad work. Everything works perfectly when plugged into front USB port (any of the four up there).

-When just in Windows, fan cycles once every 1-2 minutes (especially when I open a new program or something). When running F@H it cycles continuously no matter what else I'm doing. Up/down/up/down/etc/etc/ad nauseam.

-The Vcore defaults to 1.225V on my board/chip so I will try bumping that up a bit and see if it makes a difference.

-The AF7P is loud enough when cycling that I can hear it even with the case closed and put into my desk behind a drawer facing. I'll try the AUX fan header to see if that changes anything but I will probably end up switching to the copper core hsf from my e6400 (it was quieter under load than this AF7P is).

can't you adjust the fan speeds in uGuru? if not, I know that you can set it in bios. Just alter the sensitivity so that it needs 80c or whatever to speed up and you might be able to fix that problem. alternatively, you can get a manual fan speed control and set it to whatever speed you want. I love that on both my tuniqs and my zalman btw, once you've had one of those it would be hard to go back!

found it in uGuru. hit setup button, then faneq.

Update:

Got uGuru installed, it promptly started flashing warnings that my cpu was running 127C and shut down my computer.

I can touch the heatsink and know that's not right...cool to the touch, slightly warm at the very base. Had to disable uGuru just to get the computer working again. Grrr...

Swapped for stock fan from e6400 and it's quieter but still cycles up/down constantly when I have F@H running.

USB keyboard problem fixed by installing extra USB ports on the back (plugged into USB header).

Haven't tried to OC yet, want fan issue resolved before I try anything like that.

As a note, I'm going to Sweden/Finland/Austria for the next two weeks so I won't be able to try anything further on this system until I return. However, any further suggestions are welcome and I'll certainly try anything you guys recommend when I return.

What if we tell you to blow on your CPU in place of your fan? Will you try that?

Have you tried just flashing the BIOS?

I don't think my cpu wants a blow job at this point (although, that might be the problem, hmmm).

Haven't tried flashing the BIOS as the cpu is recognized and nearly everything works fine. Will see what the newest available is when I return to the US in two weeks.

you need to flash the BIOS to 1 of the versions of 16 or 17 betas which will fix your E8400 reported temp problem.
