Trap them and find a feral colony a good distance away to release them into.

cats are so cute. They will do a good job at eating vermin also. I have a stray black kitty that sleeps on my front porch.

Cats are cute. They also have no natural predator, because they're domesticated. As a result, cats breed like crazy and destroy the small animal population. Not just mice. Mice, rats, voles, any ground or bush - nesting birds like kildeer, rabbit, etc etc.

Having non-restrained cats running around able to reproduce screw up the natural habitat of a lot of critters in a bad way.

Animal Control isn't going to stop you from trapping them and getting them neutered/spayed. Makes no sense that they would waste their time. I'd just do it and find a place that will give you a good rate for a bunch of procedures.

Creating a stable feral colony by spaying/ neutering is probably your best bet. Once fixed the existing cats will defend their current terriritory. Getting rid of the current cats really won't fix the problem for long, before you know it new unaltered cats will come along.

If you have no kill shelters or a Vet school anywhere near you, I would call and as if they know of any spay & release programs. These programs can be great, cats get examined, they get shots, really sick , injuried animals are humanely put down.

my one neighbor has like 10 cats at his house, all outside. started out by people dropping off strays. then they breed. problem is, his wife feeds them so they stick around.

my dog chases them every chance he gets. he even barks at them even if they are like 100 yards away.

i'm trying to figure out a way to contain the cat/kitten explosion happening around my neighborhood right now.

i know if i trap them and try to give them to animal control they'll laugh in my face and turn me away. or ask me to pay them a fee to take the cat, like when i found a stray dog last year wandering the streets.

can't really commit a kitty 187 so then I ask you me fellow home owners, what are my options?

i don't really hate cats, but i don't like them either. i'm sick of washing my car and then the next morning i see paw prints all over my hood. pisses me the hell off.

Animal control will just take them and gas them.

Are you serious in this?

I'll take the cats off your hands for $40 each (you pay me, not I pay you).

Also, regarding those spay/neuter programs. It's nearly pointless (correct me if I'm wrong) to waste money on neutering, unless it makes the males less likely to spray their urine to mark their territory. One male cat can service dozens of females. I.e., on my farm, I only need 1 male goat for 50 female goats. My brother raises beef cattle. He only has one bull, which takes care of a few dozen females. A program that neuters male cats fails as soon as it misses just one male; and there are plenty of homeowners who let their male cats outside who will gladly take care of those females in heat. I'm guessing that people think, "hey, there are 24 females and 24 males; 23 of those males are neutered, therefore only 1 female cat can get pregnant. Reality is, all 24 of those female cats are going to have kittens that all have the same father. Thus, a waste of money for the expense of neutering.

Also, mail the female cats to Red Squirrel - they're better mousers than male cats.

Many neutered cats don't spray. Are you really a farmer?

Also Cats can have multiple fathers for a litter.

You should complain to your mayor and council person.

i'm really thinking about this option. i can't seem to find a legal solution to this problem. i don't mind a few cats in the neighborhood but when you see one cat chasing down another cat (cat jacking) in the middle of the street (all i saw was two orange blurs), i think it reached the point that something needs to be done.

i am very serious. what are my other options? animal control told me i can't trap them myself as i might trap a possum or racoon or some other animal instead of cats.

she said i can buy some spray or some such crap to keep them off my property, but i have a huge yard and drive way that's shared between myself and my neighbor so the logistics of this can get a bit tricky. the yard is shared for parking purposes only so it's not like there's a fence separating properties.

Live trap, tank full of water and a shovel. I live in the country so a 22 rifle takes care of mine. If you are too much of a pansy, try mouse traps baited with sardines placed on your car, kinda like aversion therapy.

edit: don't advertise what you do on the internet.

Animal Control should be able to remove possums and raccoons as well. You want to only use hav-a-heart traps or a comparable live trap and you will need to check your traps each day.

I agree it sucks. I was managing a feral colony and it cut down on the nuisance others faced dramatically since they mostly stayed in my yard and the school behind me.

A new neighbor moved in and began shooting at my house and leaving poison around my yard. I have three dogs that go into my backyard that wouldn't know better so I had to stop the colony.

Now people's trash gets torn up and I see cat's everywhere again (I was spaying and neutering now no one is).

The real problem is some of the neighbors have their own cats that roam and they haven't bothered with de-sexing them.

OP, I take it there aren't any good Chinese restaurants near you? Perhaps, it is time you open one.

i honestly can say that after reading through this thread, some of you people are some sick MF'ers. LOL. Trapping and killing cats. I joke, but I grew up partially in Jersey but my parents from South Carolina so every summer i spent down there was with either a shit load of kittens or a shit load of puppies. I was even temped to adopt one of the cats that came up to me one night looking desperate. Kinda broke my heart for some reason. But I still want them gone from my backyard.

Make a game out of it. Post on Craigslist and Facebook: Super Kitty Adoption Event! Bring your own net and join in the fun! Limited time only, while stray cat supplies last.

Never know, some people may show up.

I don't think they're sick, particularly if they euthenize the cats humanely. The harsh reality is that there is an overpopulation of feral cats in some areas that needs to be remedied. The cats are not friendly, and are just as wild as other small animals like possums.
