I'll go a step further and describe anime as "just darn wierd". Things I've noticed common to most anime:

1) The story usually focuses around a group of five misfits: the handsome leader, some sort of princess (there seem to be a lot of them in the future), a gung-ho jerk that doesn't fit in, a brainy guy, and a character that handles comedy relief. Seems most Japanese animation follows this format for some reason....it's like Hanna Barbarra is controlling them (For the slower people here, after Scooby Doo hit it big, all of Hanna Barbarra's following cartoons had the same characters in them with different names).

2) What's with the swords? They have all these futuristic weapons that just bouce off things, but if they get hit buy a sword, KA-BLAM!!! It's trashed.

3) Everyone uses giant samurai robots to do combat in. You'd think people in the future would make more effective weapons that teaching 50' robots martial arts. To top it off, the giant robots use swords that can cut through anything! Why don't they make armor out of the same stuff they're making the swords out of???

4) Appearently the voiceover people never heard of punctuation. Typical script reading: "Oh, we must run to the cave yes we must run quickly huff huff puff puff whew that was close the evil monster is most evil yes he is huh ohhhh." People in Japan must speak 10x faster than English speaking people, because it seems like te voiceovers are read as fast as the person can possilby go...they remind me of the people that read disclaimers at the end of car ads on the radio.

5) Everything is so drawn out and over dramatic, it makes it hard to watch. It's like watching William Shatner doing a soap opera....blech!

And that's my feelings on anime. Didn't we discuss this before somewhere?

Regarding the fast talking and lip syncing problems with Japanese animation dubbed into English:

In the process of creating American animation, the script is read and recorded, then the animators create the lip and facial movements according to what is said and its inflection.

In the process of creating Japanese animation, the animation is created first with all of the facial expressions. This is because the animation has manga (comic book) roots. Then, the voice talent watches the animation and attempts to synchronize the script with the action.

This is why they may seem to talk fast in Japanese, and even faster in the English dub. Or why there is terrible lip syncing.

In animation, time is money and there is a price on each frame. Save a frame, save a buck. Hence the sometimes jerky motion.

Bet you didn't think you would learn something today.

Here, have a little fun. Watch any current anime, but turn down the sound. Look at the characters lips. Pretty simple huh? Sure, there are raised eyebrows and open eyes every once in a while, and an occasional circular mouth to show excitement.

Now watch current high quality American animation, if you can find it, and look at the mouths. The movements are a little better.

Now watch some real old American stuff, from the 30's and 40's. The mouth movements are so good, you can read their lips!

Hey thanks a lot Taarna and Desturel....I'm in the process of downloading an episode of Saint Seiya right now =) I hope it will be as good as I remember it to be.

Also, I love non-action Anime....like Junk Boy on the Sputnik7 website. Comedy anime is the best. Anyone know of other good, non action/combat anime...and where to find some episodes?

Thanks,
Che

"Comedy anime is the best. Anyone know of other good, non action/combat anime...and where to find some episodes?"
somebody recommended ping pong club, and i would throw excel saga, dragon half and sexy commando masaru in there also. good luck

re: la blue girl -- dude, that's what dude said that sparked this whole debate (i've been watching anime since gogogo reruns, but never seen lbg, the covers are enuff) it's a testament to the power of taihen that lbg STILL sells out even though it's subtitled
did anybody recommend yawara? it has EVERYTHING anime is (except nudity and/or giant robots)
and peeple watching dubbed anime CANNOT complain about the voices. that's like eating produce that fell off a truck and complaining that the peaches are bruised...

people here have been saying akira was all hyped up, but i have to say i'm impressed by the rerelease -- just won't pay the special edition price
the scope of the story is huge, check out (not necessarily buy) the manga also being rereleased by dh
domu is also good
iczer? i have that somewhere here, alomg with the other anime i haven't gotten around to seeing
but i look at the boxes and think of a-ko
american animation is smoother, but the draftsmanship and proportions are much better in japanese animation
batman/superman/reboot versus gundam ms/birdy the mighty/proton

Must recommend:

Lain: Seriel Experiments

Excellent series...although something that you will either love or hate. Gives you something to think about all the way through.

are you talking about Totoro's hentai? There's a bath scene in it with young girls and a decitful old man...

If you were asking people what hentai they would suggest then I suggest Bible Black, Words Worth, Natural Duo, and Imma Youjo to start off with... only I don't know if Natural Duo was brought to America yet. As for comedy anime that aren't action, you should check out Magic User's Club aka Mahotsukai Tai and some of the Mahou Shoujo they are finally bringing over like Fancy La La and Saint Tail.

another vote for DNA^2, it was kinda cute, like ah my goddess.. of course, it's all nothing compared to the quality of cowboy bebop
the cowboy bebop dub isn't even that bad, usually i don't consider dubbed anime as 'real' anime.

oh well, full metal panic will be interesting next season

trigun 2nd season is out, known as Trigun Maximum.

my current favorite: hikaru no go (there was even an article on MSNBC claiming because of this anime, asian children every began to play go once again)
my old favorite: rurouni kenshin

both of these have fabulous artwork and story plot. my only regret is that kenshin was ruined by sony because the manga couldn't keep up with the anime releases.

that's all ^_^x
