We have a local school who would like to broadcast sports games over the internet. The idea was brought to us (an ISP) as we have done work with them before by broadcasting there radio casts over the internet, which was very easy once we got approval from the radio station.

This time it is a litte different. They have decided that they want to call into a specified phone number, enter a password then stream this call out to the internet live as a broadcast. I have had a few idea's on bits and pieces of how to do this but have not come up with anything solid yet. How would you approach this? Calling in and getting a softphone device to answer is the easy part, rebroadcasting that call I am not to sure about. Any ideas?

I don't know the answer.

To plow up info that'd lead to an answer, it'd probably help to ask your telephone company, and also ask a couple of the VOIP companies, of which there are many, e.g.;
SunRocket
GNUTelephony
TeamSpeak
plenty of others.

Can't you just take the audio output of whatever softphone you're using and feed it into a streaming encoder? An audio feed is an audio feed, right? So, whether you're rebroadcasting (streaming) an off-air radio broadcast or taking the audio output of some software application, what's really different? You just need to get the audio output into the streaming software.

If need be, just use two computers and take the line out of the soundcard that the softphone is on and feed it into the line-in audio port of the pc/soundcard that you want to stream from. That's just a quarter-inch (mini plug) cable (at both ends) that would be required. I would think that streaming software can take a soundcard output off of one soundcard and encode it, without the need for a second pc. But, if you'd rather be safe, just use one pc for the softphone, and one for the encoding/streaming.
