Yep, picked it up today for $20, very nice price, I'd been holding off since I'm not a huge fan of arcade fighters, but for $20, it's hard to pass up.

What console should I buy this game for?
I'm a noob at this, btw. I don't want to buy a stick yet. Might make my own.

Xbox 360 Pros:
- 2 of my friends play it religiously with arcade sticks

PS3 Pros:
- D-pad
- Free PSN

You don't have an xbox live subscription already? I'd recommend the 360 seeing how it's harder to find matches on PSN and you get literally bombarded with match requests on live, but the recent price drop should give both consoles a decent surge.

Hmmm...I guess I will buy it for 360. Would the D-pad sandpaper mod for the 360 controller work for a newbie like me? At least until I make a stick?

Not very well lol. I hadn't played in a while, and the only practice I had beforehand was for like half an hour with the rest of Norcal.

The buffet at the Rio was awesome though lol.

So I can get away with the following:

360 Wireless Controller guts
Happ (or Sanwa) Joystick, 6 buttons + 2 other (cheaper) buttons for start/guide
Some sort of box
Solder gun/solder (or can I get away with electrical tape ?)
wire

ordered from Gamestop for $20 today. I guess I'll see what all the fuss is about.
I recently got Soul Calibur 4 and played it once so far and haven't really had any interest to play it again. Fighters haven't really been that interesting to me since my HS days though. used to really like SF2 though.

You definitely need to solder. No question about it.

I'm not a very good sagat and rely mostly on his high tier randomness to win fights but we can play on PC if the lag is barable. just send me an invite next time you see me online

Cool if I see you on there I'll send a message.

Yesterday I found out that my TV has a 90ms video lag, which is 5.5 frames in sf4, which is one of the major reasons my timing was completely fucked at this tourney last weekend when I had to play on a CRT doing moves early and having nothing come out.

So I may be playing oN PC more becase my PC monitor, while it probably has some lag, is a lot less than my DLP. the only problem with the PC version is there is not much competition at all on there.

Also FWIW, Gamestop pulled their $20 deal way early, ending it last night.

I would enjoy playing against you some time. You're in a class far above me, but I'd really like to learn to get better.

It's either Child of Wonder or childofwonder. Can't remember if XBL allowed spaces.

Thank you for playing with me! I managed to win a single fight!

It's amazing the level guys like you are at compared to someone like me. I want to improve at the game. Back in the day I used to dominate all comers in SF2 CE at my local arcade.

Right off the bat I can tell the standard Xbox controller just doesn't cut it. No matter how many times I've tried in training to focus cancel out of a Dragon Punch into any move (EX Fireball, Ultra) I just can't get it. Maybe my button config (medium kick and punch are the left and right triggers) isn't optimal.

Again, thanks for the match.

ggs man.

you definitely have the basics down. one thing you should work on for sure is not jumping into your opponent so much. it seemed like you did that too often.

also, work on blocking crossups . it seemed like I landed the majority of them on you no problem.

another tip - throw more. as cheap or whatever as people tihnk it is, it's effective, and you won't improve your game unless you throw more. it completely throws off someone's mixup game.

overall i'd say you should try to be more aggressive too. i notice whenever i lose to people, 90% of the time it's because i'm on the defensive too much, and sometimes it's because my opponent is just overly aggressive and mixing me up. i know it may sound like a pretty basic strategy to use, but it makes a big difference. i noticed i was chasing you alot of the time.

other than that, just work on execution. it seemed you got kind of confused about what to do when you had the chance to combo me. also, don't throw out dragon punches so often, as they are easily punishable. try to learn the FADC also, because that can make the difference between a safe DP that is blocked and a whiffed one.

not trying to knock you at all, so don't tihnk that. just trying to give you some constructive pointers on stuff I picked up when playing you.

my timing was slightly off as well, i was missing quite a few of my easy balrog combos (ending in the headbutt), and i tihnk it's cause i have been playing on PC a lot recently and my DLP that my 360 is hooked up to has tiny video lag.

we will play more again for sure. and man, you were SO close to beating me the full match when I was akuma! you couldn't even see my health when i landed that EX dragonpunch on you to end round 3.

since i main balrog and play him like 95% of my matches, i have trouble using the shotos sometimes now. i really want to learn ryu more because he's a lot of fun to play with. but going back/forth, i tend to have issues when i try to use ryu after using a charge character so long.

oh yea, also if you were using the pad you did a good job with that. i can't play this game at ALL with a pad, way too hard heh.

I was looking for some pointers and things to work on and this will help a lot. The critiques are welcome and appreciated.

Execution was an issue for me tonight. There were several times I wiffed moves or combos. Once or twice my thumb slipped off the stick completely.

That Akuma battle was a good one. With you throwing the EX DP right out of that teleport what was my best option? Just start mashing the jab button as you passed me or try a throw?

I look forward to the next round of ass kicking.

hmm honestly i think at that point your health was so low that it was basically the next person to get chip damaged would die. i kind of threw that out there with that mentality.

i think your only option at that point would have honestly been a back dash to make me whiff the uppercut.

And dashing with the Xbox controller is a PITA.

Learning the mechanics of characters' moves is another point I need to work on. For example, not knowing what to do after your teleport, etc.
