i think your only option at that point would have honestly been a back dash to make me whiff the uppercut.

And dashing with the Xbox controller is a PITA.

Learning the mechanics of characters' moves is another point I need to work on. For example, not knowing what to do after your teleport, etc.

best bet after a teleport is probably a sweep in most cases.

i just wish i could use akuma better, he is nasty in the right hands.

holy jesus fucking christ is this game hard! tried playing just the arcade mode and 1s 2 battles weren't too bad but i can't get past the 3rd. that fat guy rufus is just insane. i can barely land a hit on him. tried ken and chun li. then went to vega but i had to fight el fuerte and he's so fucking fast i can't tell where he is on the screen.

doesn't help that i can't pull off most of the special moves either. i don't get it. i used to be fairly decent with SF2 turbo back on the SNES. I wasn't competition worthy but I could at least play the SP mode and get to the final boss. I could at least pull off most of the moves. maybe it's the controller that I'm not used to with the analog stick?

AHhh!!11 /rant

Gamestop's price marked down was supposed to last until Aug 2nd, so I was waiting on picking it up today (sat) in store, but apparently the prices changed earlier yesterday. Oh well, Guess I'll have to buy it for $40 now...

You also have to factor in that the standard 360 controller is pure garbage for fighting games. The PS3 controller is a little better, but not by much, and you generally don't want to use your analog stick.

That said, the game is still playable on a 360 controller, but you have to use a character that can exploit the weak 360 d-pad, and that character for me was Zangief. With Zangief, more often than not, you can be a little inaccurate when doing the full circle throws. Characters that primarily use quarter circles (your kens, ryus, abel, sagat, etc), the 360 dpad can be problematic because when you transition from down to forward, the dpad wants to go up.

If you want to become competetive at this game, you either need a better controller/fightstick or adapt to the controls with a different character.

i went intto the training mode to practice moves and i got soem of them down now. still a bit difficult on some though.
one thing i can't seem to figure out is the attacks that use a focus move, like Chun Li's spinning bird kick or kikoken. maybe I don't understand what it means in the manual. Let's use kikoken for example. It says to press left while charging and then press right and a punch button.

so that means while pressing left and i hold med kick and med punch at the same time to charge, then press right and any punch?

I don't quite get the focus charge attacks.

not sure what you mean by focus charge attack...

a focus attack is done by pressing MP + MK.

there are 3 levels of focus attacks, depending how long you hold those buttons down for.

if you hit with a level 3 focus attack, it crumples your opponent and gives you a free shot at them, but you are vulnerable for a while before it hits.

her kikoken you simply charge back for 1 second or so, then press forward + punch at the same time.

'charge focus attacks' may be referring to the level 2 and level 3 focus attacks.

well look at the manual for chun li. it shows the analog stick with a left arrow beside it and the word charge on it. then it shows the right arrow and the analog stick + a punch. am I misunderstanding something? what does "charge" mean?

pontifex: there's your answer.

You simply hold left for close to 2 seconds and then hit right and punch at the same time. Same principle for guile, balrog, blanka, bison, etc.

The beauty of this is that you can charge your attacks while your character is doing something completely different. Charge characters are more difficult to master IMO, but generally, in the right hands, they're the most dangerous characters.

How beneficial is it to use an arcade stick? I can perform the specials on the PS3 d-pad, but my thumb hurts like a bitch after a while. It's hard to do the moves on the analog stick, like the shoryuken. I'm not sure if that difficulty transfer to a stick.

Played 3 different people online and got my ass handed to me each time. I just can't pull off the moves reliably and I think if I could do that, I might be able to do better.

The stick won't necessarily help you immediately. There's a serious learning curve (I'm going through it right now) to fight through before you become competitive.

The PS3 dpad is better than the 360's, but the PS3 dpad is also a lot stiffer. I highly recommend a stick now that I've tried one myself. It's great. But, if you don't want to lay down the cash for one, pick up a madcatz fightpad (which has a pretty good floating dpad) or a Sega Saturn USB controller off of ebay. Most usb controllers that are compatible with the PC will be compatible with the PS3 (except for 360 stuff of course).

did a friend request on PSN for you. also did everyone else who posted their PSN name.

Goddamn, even on the easy setting the game is impossible. 1st 2 fights go easy. 3rd fight, no matter who it is, it seems like the game just goes nuts and ratchets up the difficulty to INSANE! and i can barely land on a hit on the other character. finally beat him by extreme luck after 20 continues and fight like 2 or 3 more characters no problem and then I get another one that becomes insane. is this normal?

so I got my first tournament win today heh (only my second tourney ever) and made it to round 3 of the winners bracket and got knocked out by the guy who ended up coming in 2nd place so i didn't feel too bad.

then in the losers bracket i lost to the guy who is known to be the best chun li player in maryland. first match he played me as viper though and beat me, then the second match i beat him, then he changed to chun li for the 3rd and final match, and he won in 3 rounds

good stuff though, playing people offline is so much better than online and i am learning a lot from these guys.

Need help doing Ryu trial challenge #4. It's Jumping Hard Punch, Standing Hard Kick, Shinkuu Hadoken.

I can't pull off the Shinkuu Hadoken until Ryu kick finishes.

Wow, if I put my shirt or a piece of cloth over the d-pad everything becomes so much easier to do.

LOL...that's some old school technique there. I preferred socks back on the NES since a large one fits so well and can't slip off.

Close hard kick hits twice. Buffer the motion during during the first hit of the hard kick so that it cancels into the super.

Just an FYI, I just missed getting Gouken at the highest difficulty setting the game has(no continues, perfect finishes and ultra finishes required) and I still get my @ss handed to me online, badly. I'm very reliant on timing and online the timing totally changes depending on your connection, I do WAY better offline then online.

Stick with the dpad without a doubt, the analog stick isn't reliable enough to pull off moves on the PS3, the dpad is much, much better. The MadCatz fight pad if you can get your hands on one is significantly better then the PS3 controller and isn't too expensive. It is such a difference we have banned it from 'couch tournaments' as we only have one atm(planning on getting a second).

i can't use the dpad because the stick gets in the way.

Is this what you mean by buffer? j.hp, qcf.hk, qcf.hp

I did that, but I still can't pull it off.
