found where the street racing occurs in my city.

Mostly mexicans. several black people, few white guys.

Next time I shall remember to park under a light at the gas station, don't know why I didn't think of this. I was 25 yards from my car and this chubster 17 year old mexican kid is standing about a foot and a half from it with his mexican buddies' beat up old toyota tacoma parked right next to my ride. I was about to go get a drink, looked back, and saw what was going on, so walked back and left.

I also think I will pack next time, and bring several friends. Any other advice?

what was going on?

and unless you plan on becoming a part of that scene, not going is a way better option than packin and getting a crew together.

What are you going to 'pack' anyway? A chequered flag? A get out of Jail Free card? A bottle of the finest vintage NoS? New welds for your intake?

I have a script for you to take so you don't sound like a n00b in front of all the hardcore racers:

"You almost had me? You never had me - you never had your car... [slang term for negative driving action], not [slang term for positive driving action] like you should. You're lucky that [automotive performance item/action/part] didn't blow the [automotive engine part] on the [larger automotive part]! You almost had me?"
"You tell him [long-form tough-guy character-name]. Get out of here!"
"Now, me and [tough-sounding sidekick nickname] got to [automotive repair action] the [automotive part]... and replace the [smaller automotive part] you [impossible action done to smaller automotive part that majority of audience won't notice]. Ask any racer. Any real racer. It don't matter if you [cliché] [cliché] or [cliché]. [Cliché] is [cliché]."

Indeed steer clear of that stupidity if it's just general street races with random turnouts. Don't know where you are, but in Cali you can be cited just for spectating, and if you're caught participating, you can lose your car.
I used to go when I was in my early 20s, but cops started cracking down on it big time.

Fortunately I decided not to go one week, and saw on the news they blocked off the streets and cited over 100 people. Never went again after that.

Have gone to a couple private meets where they are organized and only a dozen cars or so show, and go some place quiet.

And packing would be retarded, if you get pulled over for racing you're probably going to prison for a while if they search you. They go over your whole car here looking for illegal things such as nitrous.

Maybe you're lucky and live somewhere they just give you a slap on the wrist though, I saw a thread about a couple guys caught racing by a police chopper with the birds view video on youtube, said all he got was a $500 fine which was the max penalty lol, running a red light in Los Angeles will cost you just shy of that.

I don't know that I would pack if I were racing. This was just for showing up and watching and dealing with the mexican dude that was RIGHT next to my car and clearly about to do something.

The racing is a regular event so apparently the cops haven't caught on or they haven't shut it down/don't care yet.

Hanging around those crowds, getting busted racing is the least of your worries.

this is what I'm thinking/asking, that I might not even want to touch the whole racing crowd and betting on myself when racing. If I win they might not like that I took their money. Or if I win at all they might not like that. I'm the clean white boy high roller with an engineering job. In other words I'd have no problem financing this and beating them.

WTF you going to try and accomplish?

in an alternate scenario, it happens again and I ask him to step away from my car, and he gets tough and wants to start a fight because his mexican buddies (father and brother?) are watching in the beatup tacoma and he has to make a move and do something badass.

the "accomplish" would be being able to defend myself and keep them from screwing with my car.

These weren't the racing guys, these were some other random dudes. I noticed everyone else had a full load in the car and were parked in (more visible locations) than I.

Wait, so now you're considering on going and actually racing in one of these events? By what you're saying, you sound:

-Racist
-Incredibly ignorant
-Like you're trying to compensate for something

There's no glory in street racing. If you're a "clean white boy high roller with an engineering job" like you say you are, then go buy an M3 and hit the track. Street racing is for wannabes with junk cars and more attitude than money or sense.

Dude, seriously, there is no private parking at a street race.

Why were you so worried about your car anyway? Sounds like a place you shouldn't be going to if you don't like the clientele.

Well not necessarily. They have some high dollar races here. Usually in warehouse areas though.

But yeah if you show up like a geek-type, you are going to be fucked with. One chances are if they lose they are going to go to the police rather than pay up, two they probably won't keep there mouth shut and worse try to buy internet-cred by posting up the races on some forums.

Large crowds of people like that... it's not going to be about racing or cars, it's going to be about money, drugs, alcohol, criminal activity, gang violence, stolen shit, egos, mob mentality, money, scamming, etc. Then whoever wins gets accused of cheating, someone pulls a knife/gun, etc, etc, etc. I mean just look at stuff like Pinks or even youtube videos of people, grown men who know they are on video even, accusing each other of of cheating, hiding "NOS", etc... and throwing a fit. Now multiply that x 100+ people in the teens and 20s who each have a pickup full of 10+ friends from who knows where with who knows what hanging out in the ghetto at 1 am getting pissed off at each other.

Nothing wrong with hanging out with some car buddies and going out somewhere and playing around once in a while. But what you describe is your typical large groups of random, anonymous, or uninvited people mixing together... never ends well. Same as those parties where everybody texts everybody and people who don't even know each other end up shooting each other for stupid shit.

Also I think this white boy engineer is underestimating the power of the under the table and often illegal income sources these guys have.

They may have a freaking beater of a pickup truck that's rocking a stolen LS9 under the hood.

There's only so much you can do to a car. If I replaced the pistons, rods, and o-rings on mine I could turbo it pretty nicely and certainly beat some kids out there.

World's not safe anymore....

For now I will be content with fog lights, neon lights under, etc.

That's the thing...for every real 10 sec car there is a kid somewhere with a list he will never complete for his.

And five dozen more with nothing but lights, aftermarket mufflers + huge exhaust tips (racing exhaust, right guys?!... guys...?) decals, and "cold" air intake that think they have a ten second car.
