North Korea. In the event of an actual war, what would an army that is kept in check mainly by a dictator who starves and executes his people regularly do...

It's Russia and it's not even close. Anyone that honestly thinks otherwise needs to get a vasectomy to protect the future.

Except for the fact that several on that list receive protection from the US. In actual combat allies do matter...

Russia has a large number of nuclear weapons which may or may not be functional at this point do to questionable maintenance. This is however all they have going for them at this point in time. They are not what they use to be with regards to their military.

The US has enough active, verified functional nuclear weapons in place it could wipe out ever other continent in about a half hour, without using buffs or aircraft carriers. Which is why these elections make me nervous in general also.

Of course that wouldn't happen, and the fallout would be HUGE in many ways...

Russian and Chinese maintenance has always been a bit skeptical, even during the cold war they were parading things around that were shells of ICBM's.

Are enough subs floating around out there that probably someone would get others off no matter what, but compared to LGM-30s MM III's land based and the UGM-133A Trident II's, the others are a bit anemic.

I'd basically say the countries with US support, which has been stated.

I'm not going to rant about a few other listed.

Hmm I dunno, but I guess India has the best soldiers in a bar fight since they've got the Ghurkas

Also India has more carriers than anyone else here, so they have the most mobile air power and don't have to rely on airfields.

They would get a nuke dropped on them.

North Koreans might as well try and attack with mounted calvary.
Compulsory service gives the illusion of a huge force.
They would get eaten alive if they tried to project power.
Having said that, masses of starving blind followers under a wacko regime would be a pain in the ass for any invading force.

Sorry for the confusion regarding "pound for pound".
Consider all have the same amount of weapons, nukes, soldiers, aircraft, subs, etc.

So who has the best intelligence and leadership? Or what? This poll makes no sense. Even less with this clarification.

Drop the "in your opinion" change "following" to "these" and remove P for P and finish your sentence.

Can you even edit poll titles?

Australia could actually win any war, they just need to send a hollow bomb shell filled with spiders. Well, they just have to threaten to do that, and any country will comply.

In your opinion, which of the following countries, pound for pound, has the strongest military force in the World?

North Korea
Israel
Pakistan
Iran
Russia
United Kingdom
India
Turkey
Australia
China

United Kingdom or Israel followed by Australia. The rest are mostly using Soviet\China designs with the associated fail book war plan those weapons were designed to carry out.

NK would lose badly to everybody on that list. 1950s era weapons with an 1800s style supply chain. Good times.

I thought banking was the new military? He who has the biggest positive economy will buyout the rest.

I look at it this way:

Which on the list built a modern military culture from the aftermath of a fight for survival, one that produced attrition rates that could be measured as a percentage of the whole population?

Now parse that with the presence of advanced tech and a military budget that is not a joke.

Seems like Russia and Israel are the two real contenders there for me, with China "in the mail." Others, like Turkey, UK and Australia, punch above their weight admirably. Thanks to Chinese business, the Aussies are putting together quite a Navy. Thanks Beijing!

They all still crumple under the US military and American war doctrine though. We've been able to learn from a lot of warfare, there really aren't many others who have as much operational experience. Our technological edge grew dull recently, has even been eclipsed in a few areas by Russia and China, but I see that turning around now, finally.

That's been "soft power" for awhile now, but if you're asking if actual cash or assets will be used to pacify disputes instead of conflict, sure. It's already been hasn't it? From tribute to land concessions, we've already seen all kinds of side-steps to actual fighting.

Be it pride of national spirit or plain ol 'maintaining face,' my bet is on there always being people who can't be bought off.

I think no matter where you live, most people know that the utility of money is actually rather specific, whereas the utility of force is universal. So, wars will be fought. Plato had it right.
