Struggling on whether to go LED LCD or not

Ok - here is my dilemma. I saw a demo of the newer LED backlit Samsung unit, the UN46B8000, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. What kills it somewhat for me is the price - $2,599.00 is hard to justify versus the $1624 of the LN46B750 which also looks great. Is it worth it to spend close to another $1000 for a minor increase in image quality or should I just go with the B750?

the UN46B8000 is LED edge lit not back lit with local diming. Just so you know. When i was researching and reading at avs forums, it seems many salesman were calling them led back lit.

Some of the memebers also said corner flashlighting was bad on theres, others didn't seem to notice any.

Agreed. I'd recommend getting the 52B750 for less than what you would pay for a 46" 8000.

My wife gave me a size limit - no bigger than 47".

Get the 52" and tell her it's a 46". Seriously, in a living room I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a 50" + TV. I had a friend that wanted a flat panel but no larger than 42". I told him you need a 50". He said his living wasn't big enough that would require a 50" TV. I told him yes it is. So going against my recommendation he bought a 42". He then found it was too small so he upgraded to a 46". He then wanted something bigger and guess what he has now. That's right, a 50" TV. The only way a 50" would be too big is if your living room was the size of a closet.

My living room is pretty small, it's an apartment so I really don't have a lot of space. Plus the wife likes some "breathing room" so to speak. I was originally going to get the 52" model but she vehemently was against it.

I went through all this and did about 35hrs of research. I ended up getting the PN50B860. Its as thin as the LED, but the IQ is a lot better. I was under the impression that plasma was dying, but all the manufactures are producing or reproducing them. I can get online, play mkv files off thumb drives, etc. In fact a lot of people were returning their LED and LCD's to get these plasmas. So look into it. I picked mine up at Fry's for $1870 (unadvertised deal).

My friend did get the Samsung UN55B8000 LED and while he was at my house this last past weekend he said that my uncalibrated monitor (still doing the non mandatory burn in), looks a lot better than his ever did (uncalibrated and professionally calibrated).

I am with Jack on this one. Just get a dang 52" and tell her its a 46". She won't know the difference unless she sees the number 52 on the box.

Plasma's definitely look better but I hear they have problems when used as a computer monitor and burn in, which is one of the functions I hope to use this one for. Right now the LCD manufacturers are coming up with more and more innovations to get their LCD to essentially look like a plasma.

I originally wanted a 42", and my wife was vehemently against it and wanted no bigger than a 37". We wound up getting a 50", and she absolutely loves it . It took months of discussion and watching TVs at Best Buy to get her to "allow" that size in our small livingroom (12.5' x 12.5'). We have a larger livingroom now, and it looks even better in there.

I agree. If you are using it for a monitor, even with all the protection against burnin it's one less thing to worry about. I honestly would pick a LCD over LED. The model I would buy would be LN52B750 (it was second on my list). But that is after all my research and my opinion of course. If I had to pick a LED, the new LG LED are pretty cool....

Get the bigger screen, or spend the $1000 on a surround setup.

I played with the Samsung 6000 series 46" LED this weekend. The thing is absolutely amazing even on standard cable tv (HD wasnt hooked up yet and no blue ray discs at the time). Look at the 6000-7000 series as they are slightly cheaper. We used a Samsung BDP-1600 to connect to the netflix account and it looks great and is simple to use.

As an update I went with the LN46B750 after getting a pretty nice pricematched deal on it. The 8000 series is nice but I don't like the bloom effect when watching from a side angle and I can't justify the extra $1000. I already have a surround system to hook up to it and the wifey gave me a big no-no on the 52" model. The AVSforum crowd seem to love the B750 which is what gave me the final push.
